Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Upended by Union in Regular Season-Finale

Schenectady, NY – Some early scores put the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team on its heels and the Golden Knights were never able to recover as the team dropped its regular-season finale to Union College 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-2-8 on the season and 2-2-5 in conference games, while Union moved to 6-8-5 and 2-4-3. With the loss, Clarkson was knocked out of the postseason picture on the final day of the Liberty League's regular season despite just two losses.

The Golden Knights found themselves on the defensive in the opening minutes, but it mattered little to Union, which scored twice in the first 10 minutes. The opening goal came right after a shot hit the right post and eventually was cleared out near midfield. Union had the throw-in, and Clarkson had possession briefly in the midfield, but the Garnet Chargers regained the ball and went down the right side. From there, Alexander Vittal sent a cross to the top of the six, finding the head of Lucas Montalto, who was able to sneak a shot just inside the near post at 5:02. Barely three minutes later, the Chargers scored again, this time off a direct kick. The initial ball came from about 30 yards out on the right side and a Clarkson player was able to get an initial head on it, but the ball did not clear the area and immediately fell to the foot of Montalto, whose redirect went just under the woodwork and bounced in at 8:19.

Clarkson had its first chance of the game off a corner kick opportunity, but Morgan Burke's shot was denied by Jackson Magee near the far post. The counter at the other end resulted in another Union goal when the Knights could not clear the ball out of its defensive midfield. Taking a short pass in traffic from Owen Everett, Wyatt Goldfisher took the ball near the top of the box and made a couple of moves to get to his right foot from about 15 yards out, going to the near post at 25:28 to make the score 3-0.

The Golden Knights rediscovered their offense in the second half, surpassing Union in shots in the final 45 minutes, but could not find the back of the net. The best chances of the half came in quick succession when Eric McKean's shot was denied with a tip save by Magee. On the ensuing corner kick, Clarkson had two shots blocked on the doorstep and Magee restarted the offense with a throw to the right side. One long pass down the line found Diego Pascual, who centered the ball with a cross and Owen Everett scored on the transition play for the final score of the contest.

Union finished with a 12-10 lead in shots and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal while the two teams were tied in corners at 5-5. Josh Morelli made four saves for the Knights and Magee finished with five saves for Union.
