Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Wong Scores Second of Season, But Knights Fall to Ithaca 2-1

Potsdam, NY – After a quiet first half, three goals were scored in a stretch of just 12 minutes early on in the second, but the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team found itself on the short end of the run, 2-1, against Ithaca College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca edged up to 5-3-1 and 3-1-0. Following three straight home games, Clarkson is back on the road next weekend to take on Bard College and Vassar College.

Not much action challenged the goalkeepers in the first 15 minutes of the game, but eventually both Josh Morelli of Clarkson and Johannes Berghahn of Ithaca were forced to make diving saves near the midway point of the opening period. However, after those attempts, the majority of shots and scoring chances were from far enough distances as to not put too much of a scare into either coaching staff.

That would change in the second half, as each team broke through in the first dozen minutes after the halftime break. Ithaca's Alex Cabeca was tapped a pass on the right wing for a better angle, and he sent a cross in front to Landon Hellwig, who went to the right post from about 12 yards out to put the Bombers up 1-0 at 51:30.

A little over six minutes later, the Knights would rally back to tie the contest. Clarkson played from its own defensive end consistently and the strategy worked well as Christian Silvano sent a 35-yard pass to Tayte Wong on the left side of the field. After a touch or two to get himself into better position, Wong sent a hard groundball just inside the near post to tie the game at 57:49.

However, it would be just five minutes before Ithaca would strike again as the combination of Cabeca and Hellwig converted again, this time with Cabeca the recipient of a cross from Hellwig at 63:28.

Clarkson took its time to wait for plays to develop down the stretch, trying to find an opening where the Ithaca defense appeared porous, and the Knights held possession for much of that time, but the Green and Gold was unable to get the equalizer.

Ithaca held narrow advantages in shots (12-10), shots on goal (7-6) and corner kick chances (3-2). Morelli finished with five saves for the Knights, and Berghahn made five stops for the Bombers.
