Late Goal Puts Knights On Short End of 1-0 Game Versus SLU

Canton, NY – A goal in the final minutes changed what looked to be a scoreless tie into a 1-0 defeat for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, as the Golden Knights suffered a loss to their rival St. Lawrence University on Wednesday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence improved to 4-3-2 and 2-1. Clarkson will take on another Liberty League opponent this weekend when the team hosts Ithaca College.

Although St. Lawrence came out strong in the opening minutes, the Saints did not challenge the Clarkson defense much in the first half. A direct kick sailed a few dozen feet over the goal early on and a shot was blocked before it came close to the Clarkson net. The Knights' three shots in the first half all came off one corner kick, as Logan Drake's initial header was blocked, a second shot from Drake was blocked, and then Christian Silvano's next shot went just wide of the frame.

The offense increased slightly in the second half as both teams' defenses loosened up, but most of the chances were from too far away to really provide any kind of threat. The first shot on goal for either team came from the foot of Eric McKean at about the 50-minute mark on a soft loft shot. St. Lawrence's Ben Woelfinger picked a few shots clean and snagged some crosses before they resulted in chances for the Knights, while Clarkson's Josh Morelli caught some easy challenges midway through the half.

It appeared as if a few whistles could have blown prior to the goal that was scored, as there was a possible dangerous play and also a possible handball, but the game went on without a free kick, allowing a clear to occur from the St. Lawrence defensive end. As Clarkson attempted to send the ball back the other direction, the Saints' Henry Brown came running in to block the ball, and was able to create a break towards the Knights' goal. The Clarkson defense converged on Brown as Josh Morelli came out to cut down the angle, and the ball ricocheted across the box to an open Eric Edmonds, who hit a hard grounder in with just 3:10 remaining in the game.

Clarkson finished with a 12-4 edge in shots, a 6-3 lead in shots on goal, and a 5-3 advantage in corner kick chances. Ben Woelfinger stopped six shots for the shutout, while Morelli had two denials in the Clarkson goal.
