Jezioro's Goal Sends Knights to 1-0 Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – After a slow start on offense, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team capitalized on one of its many chances in the second half to pick up a 1-0 victory over crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-5-0 overall while the Bears saw their season conclude at 4-11-1. Clarkson will host Union College to finish off the regular-season on Saturday, with a playoff spot still on the horizon for the Knights.

Chances were few and far between in the opening half, as the two teams combined for just five shots, with none making it on goal. Potsdam threatened with a couple of broken plays, but the Clarkson defense stood up. The Bears outshot the Knights 4-1 and had one corner kick chance to Clarkson's none in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Knights began to assert themselves a bit more offensively, getting several chances that either went wide or high. Jack Donnelly put a pair of shots on goal with headers in close, and Potsdam goalkeeper Lucas Schiel needed all of his frame to stop a hard Logan Drake shot that looked like it might sneak under the crossbar.

Clarkson finally broke through with less than 17 minutes to play. After Schiel was able to chase down a loose ball in the penalty area, he waited for his team to get resettled in the midfield. However, his punt was collected quickly by the Knights, as Remi Ufheil took a loose ball and sent it forward on the right wing. Freshman Jay Jezioro caught up to the long pass and didn't take long to set his sights on the Potsdam goal, rifling a hard shot from the top of the penalty box to the opposite post at 73:13.

The Bears nearly picked up the equalizer late in the game, but Clarkson goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup jumped to tip the ball over the crossbar with just a few minutes remaining.

Kladstrup finished with two saves for the shutout, while Schiel made four stops for the Bears. Potsdam finished with a 10-9 lead in shots, but Clarkson had a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson also led in corners, 4-3.
