Newport News, VA – Sophomore Josh Conklin scored in the 13th minute to put the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team in the lead against Christopher Newport, and the goal held up as the Golden Knights took down the 11th-ranked Captains 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-0-0 on the season while the Captains fell to 2-1-0. Clarkson will close out its trip in the Mid-Atlantic with a game against Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon.

Clarkson got on the board first thanks the score from Conklin at the 13:00 mark. Kyle Otis passed the ball from the midfield up to Conklin, who then one-touched a shot past CNU goalkeeper Ethan Larson's left side for a 1-0 lead. Clarkson only had one more shot on goal the rest of the game, but the Golden Knights' defense did the job against the Captains, limiting the home team to just five shots on goal overall.

Two of the shots that did not count as on frame were probably the biggest threats to ending the shutout. Gabe Splett hit the post at the 14:52 mark and Ryan Machado-Jones also hit the post early in the second half at 57:52. In the final seven minutes, Carter Kladstrup made key saves to keep the game at 1-0.

Kladstrup finished with five saves, while Larson made one save in 80 minutes and Dom Stropo was not called upon to make a save in his 10 minutes of action for CNU. Christopher Newport held a 21-6 advantage in shots, though the margin was only 5-2 for shots on goal. The Captains also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
