Knights Finish Off Weekend Sweep in Virginia with 1-0 Win

Virginia Beach, VA. – A miscue by the hosts in the first half allowed the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to leave the Mid-Atlantic with a sweep, as the Golden Knights defeated Virginia Wesleyan University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-0-0 on the season while the Marlins fell to 3-1-0. Clarkson will be back to face a North Country neighbor in SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon.

Clarkson's defense was once again up to task as the team has yet to allow a goal in 360 minutes of play in 2022. Although Virginia Wesleyan took 17 shots in the game, only six of them ended up on net as Josh Morelli was up to the task for the shutout, his second of the year.

Fortunately for the Knights, the Marlins had a costly mistake in the first half. With the ball in the Virginia Wesleyan defensive end, Clarkson was putting pressure on one of VWU's defenders, forcing a hard-paced pass back to the goalkeeper. When the goalie attempted to put a foot on the ball to steady it and make his next decision, he mistimed the play and it scooted under his foot near the top of the penalty area, rolling all the way into the back of the net despite an effort to race towards the goal line to clear the ball away.

Clarkson had an 8-7 lead in corner kick chances, but VWU led in both shots (17-11) and shots on goal (6-5). Morelli stopped six shots for the shutout, while Griffin Potter made five saves for the Marlins.
