Big Fourth Quarter Gives Knights Comeback Win at Canton, 57-53

Canton, NY – A strong run from the free throw line in the fourth quarter saw the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team mount a big comeback in the final five minutes as the Golden Knights picked up their first win of the 2022-23 season with a 57-53 victory over SUNY Canton on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights evened their mark at 1-1 on the year, while the Kangaroos dropped to 2-2. Clarkson heads to Buffalo State for the weekend, where the team will take on the host Bengals as well as Pitt-Bradford.

Clarkson scored the opening basket of Tuesday's game, only to see Canton score nine straight to take a solid lead less than three minutes into the contest. Near the midway point of the quarter, Emily Shook buried a 3-pointer to put Canton up by 12 (16-4), though the Knights did chip away slightly to come within seven after the first 10 minutes. Neither team mustered much offense in the second quarter, as the two teams combined for just 17 points, with a Samantha Dayter 3-pointer at the 3:00 mark being the last points either squad would put on the scoreboard for the rest of the half.

The third quarter saw the margin hover around the 10-point mark, where it eventually settled through 30 minutes, but the fourth saw Clarkson put up nearly as many points (26) as it did up to that point (31). Clarkson slowly got back within striking distance of the Roos, but a Joie Culkin 3-pointer with 5:05 to go gave Canton a six-point advantage. Clarkson's ability to make key free throws turned the game around for the Knights, as Lauryn Withrow hit two free throws and a minute later Veronica Tache knocked in two more to tie the game at 47. Clarkson picked up its first lead since the opening minute of the game when Mariah Benavides hit a jumper with two minutes to go, and the Knights went 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute, with two key makes by Cassidy Dumont with just a handful of ticks remaining on the clock sealing the win.

Dumont finished with a game-high 17 points, shooting 6-for-15 from the floor, while Withrow was 6-for-6 from the line for 10 points. Bella Doyle also snagged 10 rebounds for the Knights. Clarkson was 11-for-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and also shot 7-for-13 from the floor.

For Canton, Joie Culkin was 6-for-12 from the field for 16 points and Samantha Dayter went 6-for-13 for her 13 points.
