Fourth Quarter Streak Gives Knights 61-56 Win at SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – A 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter turned a seven-point deficit into a small lead, helping the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team pick up 61-56 win over crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season and the team is now off until it opens Liberty League play the first weekend of December. Potsdam fell to 1-2 on the year.

Clarkson started the game 1-for-8 shooting, but went 3-for-4 in the final four-plus minutes, all on 3-point field goals, to take the lead, 14-8, through the first 10 minutes. Potsdam struggled on offense in the first period, as only Jakia Howard found the bottom of the net, scoring all eight points for the Bears.

Both teams shot 50% or better from the floor in the second, as Clarkson had small leads throughout most of the period. Potsdam tied the score on a few occasions, but the Knights always had an answer. At the 1:32 mark, Raelin Burns hit a layup to return the margin to six points, but a basket and free throw from Xy'El Bradford was followed by a 3-pointer by Dyamon Hunter to tie the game at the half.

After a difficult third quarter in which the team shot just 2-for-13, Clarkson found itself behind by seven points. However, the Knights began the fourth with a 13-0 run while Potsdam went cold. The rally began with a Bella Doyle jumper and the Knights took the lead at 5:51 when Mariah Benavides found Cassidy Dumont in the corner for a 3-pointer, making the score 48-46. Two more layups put the Knights up by six before the Bears finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth thanks to a make from Caroline LaFountain at the 3:53 mark. Although that basket broke the scoreless stretch for Potsdam, the Knights kept the Bears at a safe distance for the rest of the game, holding a lead that would require at least two possessions for the home team to come back.

Three players finished in double figures for the Knights, led by Mariah Benavides and Lauryn Withrow, as each scored 11 points. Cassidy Dumont chipped in 10 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Bella Doyle was just short of a double-double thanks to nine points and 12 rebounds, and Veronica Tache also produced nine points in 20 minutes off the bench.

For SUNY Potsdam, Jakia Howard scored 23 points, shooting 9-for-21 from the floor, and also added 12 rebounds. Dyamon Hunter also had a solid all-around game with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.
