Clarkson Settles for Tie Versus Geneseo

Potsdam, NY – Shots were at a premium on Saturday afternoon as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and SUNY Geneseo played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the first round of the North Country Classic at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights advanced their record to 0-1-1 on the season, and Geneseo saw its mark also move to 0-1-1. Clarkson will face Buffalo State at 2:30 pm on Sunday, while Geneseo travels down Route 11 to take on St. Lawrence.

The opening 45 minutes were a matter of possession rather than scoring chances as the two teams combined for eight shots and only three on goal, most easy stops for the respective goalkeepers. Clarkson broke through early in the second half as junior transfer Taro Hayashi sent a cross from the right side in short, finding the foot of Zackary Apple. The sophomore tipped the ball in off his shoe top at the 57:11 mark for the opening goal of the contest.

About 10 minutes later, Geneseo was able to tie the game up at 1-1 on a penalty kick. The Knights were awarded the shot when a Geneseo player was taken down to the box as a free kick sailed into the penalty area. Ari Samoohy took the shot and hit a groundball to the opposite side of where Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Donahue guessed with his dive, knotting the game up at 1-1.

For the rest of the contest, shots near the frame were rare, though each team did have scoring chances up close that were cleared by defenders or pushed to the sides where the threats were minimized.

Geneseo finished with small advantages in shots (9-8) and shots on goal (4-3) while Clarkson led in corner kicks by one (4-3). Donahue made three saves for the Golden Knights and Will Price stopped two shots for Geneseo.
