Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Goal by Buffalo State Sends Knights to 1-0 Loss

Potsdam, NY – Despite keeping the ball in the opponent's defensive end for most of the second half, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team found itself on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Buffalo State Sunday afternoon in the second game of the North Country Classic at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-2-1 on the young season, while Buffalo State moved to 1-1-0. Clarkson will be on the road for the first time in 2021 next weekend when the team takes on Oneonta State and Hartwick College on Saturday and Sunday.

Shots were at a premium in the first half as Clarkson didn't have an attempt near the frame until the 14th and was without one on goal until the 25th. The Bengals were worse off, going without a shot until the 28th minute of the game.

The game was very physical overall, and the second half saw several stoppages for free kicks. Clarkson held possession for much of the half, but most of its scoring attempts near the Buffalo State goal were cleared by the defense or nabbed out of the air by the Bengals' goalkeeper Max Shoemaker.

It appeared as if the contest would require overtime, but a quick counter by the Bengals provided the lone goal of the game. Buffalo State took possession in their own defensive end just ahead of the penalty area and a long pass up the sideline found the foot of Theo Pencic. He carried the ball up and then turned back into the center of the field about 30 yards away from the Clarkson goal, hitting Zak Shaibi with a pass square above the Clarkson penalty area. Shaibi then dribbled forward and threaded a hard groundball through two Clarkson defenders at the top of the 18 and just inside the post on the right side in the 79th minute.

Clarkson finished with an 11-7 edge in shots and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks. Ian Donahue made two saves for the Knights and Shoemaker stopped one shot for Buffalo State.
