Knights Break Out on Offense In 3-0 Win Over Hobart

Potsdam, NY – In front of some die-hard fans and a group of alumni, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team picked up its first in conference play on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Knights found their offensive swagger in a 3-0 win over Hobart College at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-6-2 and 1-3-0 in league games, while Hobart saw its record fall back to .500 both overall (5-5-1) and in conference games (2-2-1). Clarkson hits the road next weekend to take on Vassar College and Bard College.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard quickly, tallying in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Setting up a free kick from roughly 25 yards out on the left side, the Knights caught Hobart napping as it appeared as if Clarkson was setting up a long volley. Instead, Mack Walton played the ball quickly to Nolan Grady in space at the top of the penalty area and the sophomore took a step in and shot a low grounder to the far post for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.

The rest of the first half was comparatively quiet offensively, but the Knights made up for that by scoring in the first minute of the second half. Brandon Bahr's throw in found the head of Ethan Boyle in the box, and Boyle's flick found the foot of Josh Conklin, who hit the volley in to the far right side at 45:58.

Clarkson netted an insurance goal midway through the half as again the Knights were able to convert quickly off a turnover. Taro Hayashi stole the ball about 35 yards away the net near the Clarkson bench and quickly played the ball up the line to Zachary Appel. The sophomore dribbled a few steps forward and launched a cross into the box, finding the head of Bobby Guilfoil about eight yards out, and his header just trickled over the line at 65:50 to make it 3-0.

Clarkson finished with a 13-3 edge in shots and had nine attempts on the frame compared to just two for the Statesmen. Each team had two corner kick chances. Bryan Benitez stopped two shots for the shutout, while Guillermo Castaneda Chang made six saves for the Statesmen.
