Benitez Makes Eight Saves in Knights 0-0 Tie at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Senior goalkeeper Bryan Benitez stood tall for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, making eight saves in a double overtime 0-0 tie against Skidmore College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-8-3 overall and 2-5-1 in conference games while Skidmore saw its record go to 7-5-3 and 2-3-3. Clarkson will close out its season on Saturday afternoon when the team celebrates Senior Day and hosts Rensselaer.

Most of the first half saw the team's put together runs in space, but little came out of them in terms of offense. Skidmore had the strongest stretch midway through the first half as the team was awarded a chance on the side of the penalty box with a direct kick, which then resulted into a corner kick, and then gave the Thoroughbreds a throw-in opportunity deep in Clarkson defensive territory, but no shots were attempted and no strong scoring chances were presented.

In the latter stages of the half, each team was called upon to make a save as Simon Falck's shot was denied by Skidmore goalkeeper Bobby Stratts, while in the waning moments the Knights were able to clear away a shot by Skidmore's Kamal Ibrahim, keeping the game scoreless at the break.

The second half saw Skidmore with a few extra opportunities that pushed Clarkson keeper Bryan Benitez to make some sprawling saves, but the best chance of the half came with about 12 minutes left to go when the Knights had a corner kick. The ball bounced around inside the six for a few seconds and Jack Donnelly was able to get a short shot off, but Stratts was able to corral the ball before it trickled over the goal line.

In the last few minutes of regulation, Skidmore was able to get a few shots off, but they were either blocked or very high, and a pair of corner kicks also not produce any shots as the Knights were able to clear the ball over the midfield line.

The first overtime was fairly quiet as each team had two shots, but none of the attempts challenged the goalkeepers. The second extra session saw Clarkson get s few chances in the first minutes, including a header on goal by Greg Schebece, but it was Skidmore that had chances late, keeping Bryan Benitez on his toes and busy. Benitez made three denials in the final five minutes to maintain the shutout.

Skidmore finished with a 19-8 edge in shots, an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-4 lead in corner kicks. Benitez made eight stops for the shutout, his fourth of the year and his second in league play. Bobby Stratts closed out the game with three saves for Skidmore.
