Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Close out 2021 With 2-0 Loss to RPI

Potsdam, NY – A penalty kick and a late goal from the visitors closed out the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team's season as Rensselaer came away with a 2-0 Liberty League win over the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 4-9-3 overall and 2-6-1 in conference games while RPI earned the top seed in the league at 7-2-0 while going to 11-4-2 overall.

Most of the scoring attempts were taken from a distance in the early going, but the Engineers caught a break late in the first half as a Clarkson player was whistled for an incidental handball at the top of the penalty area. Renssealer chose Tommaso Valagussa for the penalty kick attempt, and he converted with his right foot, going to Bryan Benitez's right and just pushing the ball past his outstretched hands at 36:02.

Clarkson had a couple of chances late in the first half to tie the game with some shots from outside the 18, but the attempts from Brandon Bahr and Taro Hayashi each curled wide without putting any pressure on RPI goalkeeper Luke Brezek.

In the second half, Clarkson's lone chance came off a corner kick when Greg Schebece's attempt was wide of the net in the 64th minute.  About 12 minutes later, the Engineers had a flurry of chances as Julio Rodriguez got a pair of shots off from in close only to have one denied by Benitez and another cleared away by a Clarkson defender. Those shots were immediately followed by a bicycle kick by Josh Gaudiano from about 15 yards out with his attempt sailing over the crossbar.

The Engineers would convert an insurance goal late in the contest. Rodriguez played the ball forward into the deep right corner, finding Reggie Durden. Durden then was able to send a cross into the box where Paul Silva was able to touch the ball in from about five yards out at 86:36.

Rensselaer finished with a 14-3 edge in shots and a 7-0 lead in shots on goal while also holding the advantage in corner kicks at 7-2. Benitez made four saves for Clarkson while Brezek was able to record a shutout without having to make a save.
