Knights Win North Country Classic with 2-0 Shutout of Springfield

Potsdam, NY – Put backs by Devon Bahr and Erick Naula accounted for both of the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team's goals on Saturday as the Golden Knights earned a 2-0 win over Springfield College on day two of the North Country Classic at Hantz Turf Field.

With Otterbein's win at St. Lawrence on Saturday, the Knights stood as the only unbeaten team on the weekend, giving Clarkson the North Country Classic title. Clarkson's next three games are on the road, as the team will face SUNYAC foes Brockport and Geneseo next weekend, with a game at Utica College occurring two weeks from today.

Chances were limited throughout the contest, but Clarkson took little time in putting pressure on Springfield with a goal less than three minutes into the game. Bobby Guilfoil took a hard shot from about 15 yards out and it was only deflected, finding the foot of Devon Bahr, who finished up close at 2:28 to put the Knights up 1-0.

The two teams totaled nine shots in the first half, but none of them proved to be quality opportunities as they were easily corralled by the goalkeepers.

Clarkson picked up a key insurance goal early in the second half. Matt Dziemian was whistled for a card in the box, giving Erick Naula a penalty kick opportunity. Reserve goalkeeper Chris Prizio guessed correctly with a dive to his right to stop the attempt, but Naula rushed in for the rebound and his second chance found the back of the net at 55:59. For the final 34 minutes of the game, only one two more shots were taken and both attempts were off target.

Clarkson finished with a 10-7 edge in shot attempts (6-3 in shots on goal), while Springfield one the battle of corner kick chances 5-3 thanks to three in the final five minutes. Noah Bell earned the shutout with three saves, while Clayton Knibbs made three saves in the opening 45 minutes for the Pride and Chris Prizio made one denial in the second half.
