Subra Scores Twice in Knights 2-1 Opening Day Win Over Otterbein

Potsdam, NY – Senior Aidan Subra scored twice in a span of less than seven minutes late in the first half to help the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team gain a 2-1 victory over Otterbein in the opening game of the North Country Classic Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights begin the 2019 campaign with a record of 1-0 and will look to stay on the winning track when they take on Springfield College on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team mustered much offense in the early going, as it took 17 minutes for Otterbein to take its first shot and another eight for Clarkson to let a shot go. Aidan Subra broke the scoreless drought with a solid individual play in the 32nd minute. The Knights were stopping an Otterbein offensive charge deep in their own end when a long pass found Subra just over the center line against two Cardinals defenders. After settling the ball, Subra carried it in, evaded one defender and then tapped a shot to the far right corner just inside the poll at 31:48.

A little over six minutes later, the Knights showed how quickly their offense could strike. Bobby Guilfoil found John Furcick in space on a throw in, and Furcick passed the ball close to the end line to Stephen Klimek. The senior then sent a cross through the crease, finding the head of Subra on the opposite side at 38:04 to put Clarkson up 2-0.

Otterbein responded almost immediately as the Cardinals showed how quickly they could counter. Seth Smith had the ball midway in the Otterbein defensive end, about 25 yards from the goal line, and sent a long pass about 25 yards away from Clarkson's end line. There, the ball found the head of Gabe Sharrock, who flicked it forward to Paul Hensley. Just one touch was all Hensley needed to settle the ball as he chipped it over the head of Ian Roeloffs at 39:28 to cut the Clarkson advantage in half.

Although neither team was able to put any more shots past the goalie, each team had their chances. Roeloffs made several outstanding saves near the posts in the second half, while Evan Yeigh was denied by the crossbar in the 81st minute on a sailing shot to the far left corner. Otterbein had one more chance in the game, but the ball was well wide of the goal and the Knights controlled the ball for the final five-plus minutes to eliminate any last second scores by the visitors.

Otterbein finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, but just four of those attempts from the Cardinals were on the frame. Roeloffs made three saves for the Knights and Andrew McIlvoy made one stop for Otterbein. The Cardinals also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
