Late Surge by RPI Sends Knights to Defeat, 10-8

Potsdam, NY – Scoring four of the final five goals of the game, Rensselaer came back from a three-goal deficit earlier in the game to defeat the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team 10-8 on Saturday to open up the Liberty League slate.

The Golden Knights dropped their second straight game to fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League while RPI remained unbeaten at 4-0 and 1-0.  The Green and Gold now head to Florida to face Rowan University prior to returning to league action next weekend.

The Golden Knights trailed briefly in the first half as RPI took leads of 2-1 and 3-2 in the opening 12 minutes of action, but Clarkson rattled off four straight scores in a stretch of just 3:40 to take a 6-3 lead, getting goals from four different players. The Knights had a chance to increase their lead on a man-up opportunity late in the half, but it was RPI that would control that time frame, forcing a turnover and eventually scoring down a player with just 11 seconds left in the penalty.

Down 6-4 to start the second half, the Engineers scored two quick goals to tie the game at 6-6 by the 27:31 mark. Sydney Roderick snuck around the defense for a goal at 23:54 to put Clarkson back up by one, but the Knights' offense would be held quiet for the remainder of the half with Aleena Milinski making quality saves in the Engineers' crease. RPI took advantage, tying the game at the 20:53 mark and pushing its lead to two over the next 12 minutes thanks to consecutive goals from Michelle Bolger. Clarkson pulled back to within one when Aubrey Borgesi scored at the 2:36 mark, but the Milinski came up big at 1:58 on a Borgesi free position shot. The Engineers cleared the zone and held possession for the rest of the game, getting an insurance goal on a last second shot from Nora Molino with the Clarkson goalkeeper out of the crease.

Sydney Roderick scored four points on two goals and two assists to lead the Knights, while Abby Collins chipped in three points with two goals and an assist. Both Mia Petrone and Borgesi also scored twice for the Knights. Borgesi added five groundball and Jaid Baytos earned five draw controls. Samantha Gladd made seven saves in 57-plus minutes for the Knights.

For RPI, Abbey Salvon scored five points with four goals and an assist and Michelle Bolger and Maddy Aslansan each scored twice. Nora Molino led the team with seven groundballs. Milinski stopped 16 shots in the RPI crease.

Clarkson held a 30-24 edge in shots (24-17 shots on goal) and also won the battle on draws 12-7. The Engineers earned 29 groundballs to Clarkson's 20.
