Late Run Gives Rowan Win Over Knights, 17-14

Englewood, FL - Senior Jaid Baytos produced her best game of the year with seven points and eight draw controls for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team, but the opposition scored six of the last eight goals over the final 16 minutes as Rowan defeated the Golden Knights 17-14 on Wednesday afternoon at the Spring Fling in Florida.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-4 overall while Rowan moved to 3-2. Clarkson heads back north and returns to Liberty League action this weekend when they face Bard.

The Knights led by as many as three goals in the first half and saw that advantage trimmed to two at the break with a last second goal from the Profs. Rowan used that momentum to start the second half and tied things up at 8-8 at the 26:05 mark. The two teams jostled back and forth for the next 10 minutes, but Clarkson scored three straight from Sydney Roderick, Lexi Smith and Aubrey Borgesi to help the Knights reclaim the lead 12-11. That was the last time that the Knights would hold an advantage, however, as Rowan began to dominate on the draws (13-5 in the second half) and produced five goals in a stretch of six minutes to gain a 16-12 lead. Baytos and Abby Collins scored in the final five minutes to pull Clarkson within two, but that was the last gasp with Rowan tallying late to put the game away.

Baytos scored a season-best seven points on five goals and two assists and she also added a season-high eight draws. Katie Sergeant tossed in four points on three goals and an assist while chipping in four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Lexi Smith also scored three points with a goal and two assists and Mia Petrone added two goals and two caused turnovers. Samantha Gladd (five saves) and Carolynn Pechmann (three saves) combined to make eight stops in the Clarkson crease.

For Rowan, Maddie Bray enjoyed a big game with eight points (six goals, two assists), six draws, two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Taylor Gretz also recorded a big line with five points (three goals, two assists), six groundballs, four caused turnovers and four draw controls.
