Knights Open 2018 with 5-0 Win Over Alfred

Potsdam, NY – With a  five-goal offensive outburst, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team started Carter Lincoln's tenure as head coach with a bang as the Golden Knights earned a 5-0 victory over Alfred University in the first game of the North Country Classic on Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights will face Heidelberg University at 12:00 noon on Saturday to complete the opening weekend's tournament.

Clarkson had some near misses in the early going, as did Alfred when they hit the post and nearly got a ricochet to go in less than 20 minutes into the game, but it was Clarkson that would find the back of the net three times in the second portion of the first half. At the 24:20 mark, Drew Lewis curved in a shot off a corner kick to put the Knights up 1-0, and the Knights were off and running. With just under seven minutes to go Aidan Subra carried the ball in deep and tapped a pass back to freshman Ben Root, who had entered his first collegiate game just 15 minutes earlier. Root drove a groundball into the corner to put Clarkson up 2-0 at 38:09. Not even three minutes later, Aidan Subra followed up with another pass to the middle, locating classmate Henry Gomez about 15 yards out. Gomez deposited the ball into the left corner to put the Knights up 3-0 at 41:05.

In the second half, the Knights tacked on two insurance goals just 27 seconds apart in the 79th minute. Aidan Subra was a part of a third goal for the Golden Knights, this time scoring on a pass from Stephen Klimek at 78:30. Only 27 seconds later, Henry Gomez converted for the second time in the game for Clarkson's fifth tally of the contest.

Clarkson owned a 19-13 edge in shots, but Riley McDonald finished with a game-high eight saves and Joe Gonzalez knocked aside seven shots for Alfred. The Golden Knights also possessed a 9-2 edge in corner kick chances.
