Two Late Scores Give Knights a 3-0 Win Over Heidelberg

Potsdam, NY - Clinging to a one-goal lead midway through the second half, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team scored twice in the final 19 minutes gain a 3-0 victory over Heidelberg University on Saturday afternoon in the North Country Classic at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0 on the young season and will be back in action at home on Wednesday when they host Utica College.

Though Clarkson finished with a modest 16-11 edge in shots and just a 4-2 lead in corner kick chances, the scoreboard clearly teetered in Clarkson's favor. Aidan Subra scored the first goal of the game in the 30th minute, ripping a shot from the right side into the upper corner over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Jake Kress. Mack Walton delivered a crisp pass to Subra to pick up his first point of the season.

The game went back and forth for the next 40 minutes, but it was Clarkson that tallied an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Subra slotted a ball to Henry Gomez ahead, and the junior beat the goalie before sending an easier pass to Walton, who tapped it in at 71:30.

Heidelberg nearly cut the lead in half with 13 minutes to go as Bryce Zeleznik had a great opportunity for the Student Princes. However, Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs used all 6-4 of his frame to lay out an deny Heidelberg the goal.

The Knights picked up on more goal in the 81st minute as Erick Naula delivered a cross through traffic, deflecting the ball of a defender, who accidentally pushed the ball across the goal line.

Ian Roeloffs earned the shutout with eight saves, while the Student Princes' Jake Kress made five saves. 

For the weekend, Clarkson outscored its opponents 8-0, with Subra leading the offense with two goals and two assists. Henry Gomez also chipped in five points on a pair of goals and one assist.
