Clarkson Falls 1-0 in Overtime to Union

Schenectady, NY – For the second time in four days, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team came up short in overtime, dropping a 1-0 decision to Union College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights remain firmly entrenched in the playoff picture (9-5-1, 3-4-1 Liberty League) but the Green and Gold do not control their own destiny. Union moved to 6-8-0 and 2-5-0 with the victory. Clarkson has two games left on the slate, traveling to SUNY Potsdam for a Tuesday night match and then to Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

Union enjoyed three shots in the first nine minutes of the game, but the Dutchmen were quieted on offense for most of the remainder of the half. Stephen Klimek and Henry Gomez were denied by Union goalkeeper Trevor Krupp in the 13th and 16th minutes, respectively, but only one more shot went on goal for the final 30 minutes of the first period by either team.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Salvador Lopez nearly ended the tie by the Clarkson defense was there to clear his shot on goal. Just 24 seconds later, a header from Kevin Fitzpatrick was corralled by Clarkson keeper Riley McDonald to keep the game scoreless.

In the middle of the period, Clarkson enjoyed plenty of chances, taking three corner kicks and getting three shots off from 56:26 to 66:51, but the scoreboard maintained its goose eggs. Just like Salvador Perez in the 50th minute, James Homan's header was cleared away by the Union defense as Krupp was not in position to make the save for the Dutchmen.

The first overtime saw Clarkson get two chances in a span of just nine seconds, but neither went on goal. However, Union ended the scoreless run when Connor Horan found Salvador Lopez in the box, with Lopez volleying a ball into the bottom left corner at 106:04. It was Union's first goal against the Golden Knights in a stretch of more than 548 minutes, dating back to 2013.

Clarkson led in shots (19-15) and corner kicks (4-3), with McDonald making five saves for the Knights and Krupp denying four shots for Union.
