Homan's Header Gives Knights Win Over Rensselaer

Potsdam, NY – One header was followed by another header off a short cross as James Homan scored the game-winner in overtime to lead the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights finished off the regular season with an 8-7-2 overall mark and a 4-3-2 league record, while Rensselaer finished its year at 8-6-2 and 3-4-2. Clarkson, which finished fifth in the regular season standings, will participate in a Liberty League First Round match up against RIT in mid-week with the winner advancing to the semifinals at Hobart College.

With a whipping wind at their backs, the Golden Knights started off strong with several corner kick chances in the early going, but Rensselaer figured things out about 12 minutes into the game and started pressing things in the other direction. However, neither team could break through in the first half as the game was scoreless at the break.

The second half was a different story for both teams as each was able to knock one into the net. In the 61st minute, the Engineers were rewarded with a corner kick and took full advantage, as Trevor McCaughey lofted a ball to the opposite side of the box, finding the head of Trevor Bisson to give Rensselaer a 1-0 lead. Approximately 15 minutes later, Clarkson evened things up by quickly reversing the field. Mack Walton picked up the ball just 10 yards up from the Knights' penalty box and passed the ball to Kevin Calnan near midfield. Calnan then sent a long pass up to Alex Moureaud into the penalty box, but Moureaud one-timed the ball back out to Stephen Klimek outside of the box. Klimek then carried the ball around two defenders and hit a hard groundball just inside the post at 76:22 to knot up the score 1-1.

The two teams were scoreless for the rest of the half, but it took little time for the Knights to end the game in overtime. With just a little over three minute expired from the first overtime, John Furcick sent a short pass to Kevin Calnan off a corner and Calnan then tapped the ball back to Furcick, who then sent a lofting cross through the box. He found the head of freshman Greg Schebece, but instead of taking a shot, Schebece redirected the ball to James Homan in front, and the junior defender was able to find the back of the net at 93:21 with the game-winner.

Clarkson and Rensselaer finished with 14 shots apiece, while the Knights owned an 8-5 edge in corner kicks. Riley McDonald finished with six saves to pick up the win for Clarkson and Matt LaBranche recorded nine saves for Rensselaer.
