Knights Fall in Liberty League First Round at RIT, 2-1

Rochester, NY – Although the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team got on the scoreboard first, the Golden Knights' chances dwindled down the stretch as RIT came from behind for a 2-1 victory in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season end with a record of 8-8-2 overall, while RIT improved to 8-5-3. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals this weekend at Hobart College.

Things started off slow between the two teams, with neither putting much together in the way of offense, but the Knights were the first on the scoreboard thanks to the quick acclimation of freshman Alex Moureaud. Coming on to the field as a substitute at the 21:55 mark, Moureaud scored just 27 seconds later when he struck a hard shot with his right foot from the top of the penalty box into the upper near corner at 22:22 to give Clarkson a 1-0 early advantage.

RIT came right back less than eight minutes later, however, when the Tigers were rewarded with their first corner kick of the game. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, Gene Sicoli sent a cross in from the right corner all the way through the box, finding the head of Mark Vincent Sansone at 29:55 to even the score at 1-1.

Though the Tigers owned just a 6-5 lead in shots at the break, RIT would carry the play in the second half, getting many opportunities on the Clarkson frame, but usually shooting wide or high. Dean Kouroupas missed late in the 57th minute on a wide open net after Clarkson goalkeeper Riley McDonald came out to challenge a cross and less than a minute later McDonald made a save and saw the ensuing rebound go just wide after another RIT shot.

RIT continued to take some long shots that went well wide over the next 20 minutes, but the Tigers finally broke the tie in the 78th minute. Kouroupas carried the ball in near the six but sent a quick pass back out to the top of the box where Simon Garno took a few steps in and shot the ball just under the crossbar to give RIT a 2-1 lead at 77:26. A few moments later, Clarkson's lone shot of the second half from Jon Jones went well wide and the Knights couldn't recover from the deficit.

The Tigers finished with an 18-6 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kick chances. Riley McDonald made four saves for Clarkson, while Peter Cinibulk made two stops for RIT.
