CU Men's Soccer Travels to Geneseo and St. John Fisher

After a tough overtime loss, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team will take to the road for the first time this season when the Golden Knights travel to play Geneseo State and St. John Fisher this weekend.

Clarkson is 2-1-0 so far this season. The Green and Gold started 2-0-0 by defeating Ithaca 2-0 and Brockport 1-0 in the North Country Classic. However, on Tuesday Clarkson could not score against Plattsburgh and a goal in the 102nd minute gave the Cardinals a 1-0 victory.

Through three games, Clarkson is second in the Liberty League in opponents' goals allowed. One big reason for that is the play of senior goalkeeper Michael King who was named Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week. King already has two shutouts this season and made a handful of crucial saves in against Plattburgh to send the game into the second overtime period. King has been joined on the backline by Andrew Akiki, James Homan, Zach Golden, Josh Eidem, and John Furcick, all of whom have played the majority of available minutes.

In the offensive end, Kevin Calnan has been the leader for Clarkson. Calnan scored both goals against Ithaca, with one coming from a long range shot and the second through a header on a corner kick. Against Brockport, Calnan turned provider as his assist set up Stephen Klimek to score the game-winning goal. For his performances, Calnan joined King in being honored by the Liberty League and was named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week. Klimek and Erick Naula both recorded their first collegiate points over the weekend, with Klimek scoring against Brockport and Naula recording an assist in the Ithaca victory. Brian Kroetz is the other Golden Knight with a point so far as he also had an assist against Ithaca.

Geneseo has started its season with two victories en route to winning the Garnet Alumni Classic at Swarthmore. The Knights started the season with a resounding 5-0 win over Rosemont before defeating host Swarthmore 2-0. Seniors Matt D'Amico and Ethan Gunty lead the way for Geneseo as each have scored two goals and added an assist so far while freshman goalkeeper Dillon Medd has two shutouts and five saves to start his collegiate career. Clarkson has struggled against Geneseo in the past, amassing just a 2-9-1 record against the Knights. However, last season saw the two teams battle to an exciting 2-2 draw.

St. John Fisher has a 1-2-0 record this year but its one victory came over Liberty League foe Hobart in the Cardinals' most recent game. St. John Fisher dropped its first two games, starting with a 4-1 loss to Keuka and then a 1-0 loss to Kean. Jeff Meyers has three goals early in the season, including two in the win over Hobart. Clarkson has only matched up with St. John Fisher twice, once in 1995 and then during the 2015 season. Last year, Clarkson came away with a 3-1 home win with Brian Kroetz and Tucker Wilcox scoring two of the goals.

Clarkson will take on Geneseo at 4:00 pm on Friday and will play St. John Fisher at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
