Lancette Plates Eight in CU Softball Sweep of Potsdam State

Potsdam, NY – The team has only played a little over 80 games in its history, but nevertheless the Clarkson University Softball team set a pair of new standards on Saturday afternoon when the team broke records for most runs in a game (13) and a doubleheader (24) with a 13-1 and 11-4 sweep of crosstown rival Potsdam State.

The Golden Knights improved to 13-5 overall while Potsdam dropped to 6-10. Clarkson hopes to open its home portion of the schedule on Wednesday when it hosts Cazenovia College at Scott Field.

Clarkson was scoreless in the first while the Bears pushed one across, but the lead for Potsdam would be brief as the Knights poured on the offense in the next three innings. Clarkson tallied four in the top of the second, with the first two coming on a Raeanna Dunn two-run single. Jamie Bridge singled up the middle to plate the third run and Liz Caggiano drove in the fourth of the inning with a hard struck single in the infield. Though that would be all that the Knights would need in support of starting pitcher Jamie Bridge, the team still tacked on nine more runs in the next two frames. Bridget Woolley doubled home a run and Dunn added another run-scoring single to make the score 6-1 before Summer Lancette singled home two more runs in the third. In the top of the fourth, Woolley delivered another RBI-single and Lancette drove in three more on a double to left-center.

Bridge picked up the win in the opener by allowing just a single hit through four innings and striking out five. Maggie Stark came on to pitch the final frame for the Knights. Lancette finished 3-for-3 with five runs driven in, while Sara Armstrong also was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Chelsea Elliott, Woolley and Dunn each had two hits, with Dunn scoring three times and driving in three more.

The Knights appeared to be prepared to keep the offense going in game two when they scored twice in the top half of the first.  Liz Caggiano doubled home a run and Chelsea Elliott forced in another run with a bases loaded walk, but Potsdam scored four times in the bottom half of the inning. The two teams were quiet for the next three innings before Clarkson rediscovered its offense. Erika Jensen singled one run home and two bases loaded fielder's choices gave Clarkson a 5-4 lead in the fifth. Summer Lancette tripled into the left field corner to clear the bases to give the Knights an 8-4 lead. Clarkson tacked on another run in the sixth, and two more came across in the seventh as the Knights' defense played well in the final few innings to keep the Potsdam bats at bay.

Lancette was 2-for-4 with three driven in and two runs scored, while Caggiano and Bridge each went 2-for-5. Armstrong was 2-for-3 and was one of three Clarkson players with two stolen bases in the game, joining Raeanna Dunn and Lancette. Katie Pelton pitched the first three innings down by two runs, but came back to earn a save as she pitched the final three innings of the game. In between, Meg Tully tossed a scoreless and hitless frame to pick up the win.
