Clarkson Falls at Vassar, 4-1

Poughkeepsie, NY – Juliano Pereira scored a hat trick, including two insurance goals midway through the second half, as Vassar College downed the Clarkson University Men’s Soccer team 4-1 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights lost their first league game in the season and dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference games. Vassar moved to 7-2-1 overall and remained unbeaten in the young Liberty League schedule at 2-0. Clarkson looks to rebound on Saturday at Bard College.

The Knights were on the defensive from the beginning as Vassar out shot Clarkson 17-5 in the opening 45 minutes. However, the Brewers were able to convert only one of those shots when Pereira tallied in the 34th minute.

It didn’t take nearly as much time in the second half for Vassar to convert, with Tom Weichert scored off a crossed in volley following a blocked shot and rebound at the 47:53 mark.  The Knights responded just a few minutes later, staying in the game on a goal from senior David Maiorino (Holbrook, NY). Sophomore Jacob Duff (Lebanon, CT) came up for  a free kick and tapped the ball to Maiorino, who scored his first goal of the season in the 52nd minute.

Vassar put the game away just moments later, as Pereira scored his second goal of the game on a long shot from the right side back into the left corner, making it 3-1 at 53:49. Ten minutes later Pereira scored once again on a free kick into the high right side of the goal.

The Brewers finished with a 29-10 edge in shots and an 8-6 advantage in corner kick chances. Junior Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) recorded 11 saves in just under 75 minutes, while classmate Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) came on in relief and made no saves in 15 minutes. Gary Clauss stopped one shot in goal for the Brewers.
