Rochester, NY - Hugo Fernandez-Davila's coaching career is only six games old, and all of them have come as an assistant, but Saturday afternoon Fernandez-Davila stepped to the forefront as Clarkson University Men's Soccer head coach Willi Steinrotter left to be with his wife for the couple's first child. After a tough tie on Friday, the Golden Knights rallied for a 1-0 win over RIT on Saturday.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-3-1 overall and will return to action this weekend when they host Vassar and Rensselaer in Liberty League action. The Tigers dropped to 4-2-1.

Though Clarkson trailed in most offensive categories including shots (22-9) and corner kicks (14-0), the Knights led in the most important one: goals. Scott Marcinkowski (Wappingers Falls, NY) scored his first goal of the season in the 22nd minute when senior Seni Makinde (Hyde Park, MA) made a great run down the right side and sent a pass over to the junior striker, who finished the play to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead.

It was all the Knights would need, but RIT kept the pressure on throughout, totalling eight shots and seven corners in the second half. Fortunately, most of the attempts did not find their way to the goal, as senior goalkeeper Johnathon Rushing (Paw Paw, MI) need to make only three saves for his second shutout of the season. Alan Smith also made three saves for the Tigers.
