Clarkson University Athletics

Entering his 31st year with the Clarkson University Athletic Department, Mick Maguire was named the Golden Knights’ Aquatics director and swim coach in 1987 and has guided the Green and Gold swim teams to continued success in conference, regional, and national competition.

Currently, Maguire acts as an Assistant Athletic Director for Clarkson and is also the Intramural Director and Recreation Director. He served nine years as the women’s tennis coach and has also served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach and equipment manager.

Under Maguire’s tutelage, four swimmers have participated in the NCAA Championships, and his athletes have also excelled in the classroom where they have amassed myriad academic honors.

A 1985 graduate of Potsdam College, Maguire swam freestyle events for the Bears’ swim team and was a member of Potsdam’s 1982 SUNYAC Championship squad. He held the Bears’ school record in the 500 free and currently holds the SUNYAC Championship Meet record in the 1650 free. A native of Malone, NY, Maguire was selected to the Franklin Academy High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his impressive performance as a high school athlete. Maguire set numerous swimming standards that are still in place today. The only Section X swimmer in history to break the five-minute mark in the 500 freestyle, a feat he accomplished twice, Maguire held school and Northern Athletic Conference records in five individual events, including the 50, 100, 200, 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley in addition to two relays, the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.

Maguire makes his home in Potsdam with his wife Sheila and the couple has three daughters, Mallorie, Kaila and Kaycee.
