GIBBONS - CLARKSON ATHLETIC HALL of FAME

GibbonsHOF

One of the most consistent attackmen in program history, Greg Gibbons made a considerable impact as a scorer and leader for the Clarkson University Men’s Lacrosse team from 2006-2009 as a four-time Liberty League All-Star.

The 6-2 native of Baldwinsville, NY, took little time getting acclimated to the college game, emerging as a high octane scorer with 52 points on 34 goals and 18 assists during his first season with the Golden Knights. That strong start immediately put him on the radar of opposing coaches, as he was voted the 2006 Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year while also achieving Liberty League Second-Team All-Star status, the only time in his career that he would not be on the Liberty League’s First-Team. Gibbons never slowed his offensive pace over the years, scoring 39 goals in 16 games as a sophomore, 28 goals in just 13 games as a junior, and then 48 goals in 15 games as a senior, with the latter figure ranking as the second-highest single-season goal total in program history.

Gibbons was not just a dominant offensive performer in the league and region, but he routinely ranked among the national leaders. His goals per game average as a sophomore ranked 45th nationally and his points per game were 57th nationally in 2007, while his 3.62 points per game as a junior placed him 49th nationally in 2008. His dominant senior year saw him finish 47th nationally in points per game and he was in the top 10 at the NCAA Division III level with 3.20 goals per game, putting him ninth in the country as a goal scorer.

That success as a senior was helped by one of the more impressive offensive games in program history when Gibbons scored eight goals in a 12-9 win over RIT. He scored three of Clarkson’s five goals in the first half and then kept the Tigers at a safe distance for the rest of the contest, routinely adding a score when the Golden Knights needed to push the margin above one during the key victory. His scoring prowess helped Clarkson reach the Liberty League Tournament all four of his seasons in Potsdam, including the conference title game in 2009.

As would be expected, regional and national honors followed Gibbons as he progressed as a player. He was named Graph-Tex All-Region Second Team in 2008 and then earned a flurry of honors as a senior. Picked Graph-Tex All-Region First Team, ECAC Upstate First Team, and USILA All-American Honorable Mention in 2009, Gibbons was also selected to the prestigious North/South game at the conclusion of his senior campaign.

Gibbons also was a standout in the classroom, earning Liberty League All-Academic status as a junior and senior.
