GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2002-03 SEASON WRAP UP
The Clarkson University Men's Swim team enjoyed another outstanding year with head coach Mick Maguire at the helm. The Golden Knights were 4-1 in dual meets in 2002-03, defeating arch-rival St. Lawrence, Potsdam State, Plattsburgh State and Utica.
Sophomore Dominick Desiderio (Derby, NY) enjoyed an excellent season for Clarkson, winning three races at the North Country Invitational at Potsdam College, and coming in fifth place in the 200-yard butterfly and finishing sixth in the 100-yard butterfly at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) meet in late February.
Also contributing to the Golden Knights' success were Matt Szarma (Orchard Park, NY), who was particularly dominant in the freestyle events, Tom Willey (Burnt Hills, NY), Kevin Ashcroft (Wolverine Lake, MI) and senior captains Jeff Lia (Auburn, NY), Nate Brown (Cooperstown, NY) and Ed Sayer (Voorheesville, NY).

DESIDERIO SHOWS PROMISE AT UNYSCSA
Sophomore Dominick Desiderio (Derby, NY) enjoyed a break through performance at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA), placing fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100 butterfly as the Clarkson University Men's Swim team placed eighth in the 13-team field at the Webster Aquatic Center.
The Golden Knights finished the meet with 586 points, 133 points ahead of ninth place Vassar. Alfred finished first with 1,219 points, followed by Ithaca (1,127), Union (1,079), Hartwick (925), Rensselaer (857), LeMoyne (705) and RIT (672). Coming in after Clarkson and Vassar were St. Lawrence (299), Utica (294), Nazareth (209) and Skidmore (129).
Desiderio was just eight-tenths of a second off the first-place finisher in the finals of the 100 butterfly, in which he came in sixth place. Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) also enjoyed a strong individual showing, coming in seventh in the 200 individual medley and eighth in the 100 freestyle.
The Golden Knights finished in the top eight in each of the five relay events, placing sixth in the 200 freestyle relay, seventh in the 400 medley relay, and eighth in the 200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

KNIGHTS SWIM PAST BEARS
The Clarkson University Men's Swim team put in a dominating effort on Saturday afternoon at Fuller Pool as the Golden Knights swam past cross-town rival Potsdam College 77-25.
The Clarkson men displayed a balanced effort in their fourth dual-meet victory of the year with four different Knights winning events. Seniors Keith Lachut (Corning, NY) and Nate Decker (Whitney Point, NY) took first in the 200 free (2:16.48) and 50 free (26.78), respectively, sophomore Dominick Desiderio (Derby, NY) won the 800 free (10:23.25) and freshman Jeff Manzo (Liverpool, NY) claim the top spot in the 200 individual medley (2:31.68). Clarkson's 400 free relay team of junior Kevin Ashcroft (Wolverine Lake, MI), Desiderio, Decker and sophomore Charles Mangan (Brockport, NY) also finished first (4:38.46).

CLARKSON DOWNS UTICA
Senior Jeff Lia (Auburn, NY) won the 50-meter freestyle and swam on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay as the Clarkson University Men's Swim team defeated Utica 108-82 in a dual meet at Clarkson's Fuller Pool.
Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) won the 400 individual medley and swam on the winning 200 medley relay. Dominick Desiderio (Derby, NY) won the 100 butterfly and Tom Willey (Burnt Hills, NY) won the 100 freestyle for the Golden Knights. Each also swam on a winning relay team for Clarkson. Kevin Ashcroft (Wolverine Lake, MI) won the 1500 freestyle for the Golden Knights.
The Golden Knights return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feburary 1, at home against Potsdam State.

CLARKSON WINS 92-77 OVER PLATTSBURGH
Sophomore Dominick Desiderio (Derby, NY) took first place in the 200 IM (2:27.15) and 100 Fly (1:03.58) and also swam a leg on the Golden Knights' winning 200 Medley Relay team (1:59.51) as Clarkson University defeated Plattsburgh State 92-77 in men's swimming action at Clarkson's Fuller Pool on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Tom Willey (Burnt Hills, NY), sophomore Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) and freshman John Peck (East Hartford, CT) also gained first-place finishes for the Knights winning the 50 Free (25.35), 200 Free (2:07.79) and 800 Free (9:44.16) respectively.

KNIGHTS' SWIMMERS PLACE 4TH at HENRY KUMPF INVITATIONAL
Thanks to their depth in the relay races, the Clarkson University Men's Swimming team placed fourth out of eight teams at the 2003 Henry Kumpf Invitational Men's Swimming & Diving meet Saturday afternoon at Rensselaer's Robison Pool in Troy, NY.
The Golden Knights finished the meet with 272 points, one point ahead of fifth-place LeMoyne and 61 points behind third-place New Paltz. Ithaca won the meet with 592 points, followed by Rensselaer with 391 points. Clarkson had three teams tally points in both the 400 medley relay and the 400 free relay to help place them in the top half of the teams at the meet.
Sophomore Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) was the highest placing finisher for the Golden Knights, coming in third place in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Junior Kevin Ashcroft (Wolverine Lake, MI) came in fifth place in the 200 butterfly and Nate Decker (Whitney Point, NY) finished in sixth place in the 200 breaststroke.

CLARKSON COMPETES at UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Clarkson University Men's Swim team placed sixth at the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Championships held at the University of Rochester on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Knights posted 269 points, while Hamilton won the eight-team championship with 895.50 points. Clarkson's men's 200 free relay team placed third. Junior Tom Willey (Burnt Hills, NY), sophomore Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY), senior Nate Brown (Cooperstown, NY) and freshman Jeff Manzo (Liverpool, NY) combined for a time of 1:32.51.

CLARKSON SWIMMERS SWEEP NCI
The Clarkson University Men's and Women's Swim teams put in a dominating effort on Friday and Saturday to gain their first ever sweep at the North Country Invitational held at Potsdam State. The Golden Knight men recorded 639 points to win the six-team invitational, easily outpacing second-place Plattsburgh State (351 points). The Clarkson women posted 531 points; well ahead of second place Oneonta State (393 points) to finish first in their six-team meet.
Sophomore Dominick Desiderio (Derby, NY) won three individual races to lead the Clarkson men. Desiderio won the 200 IM (2:12.54), 400 IM (4:50.43) and the 100 Fly (57.45). Classmate Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) won two races and was a part of four winning relay teams. Szrama took first in the 200 Back (2:10.49) and 200 Free (1:55.62). Junior Kevin Ashcroft (Wolverine Lake, MI) finished first in the 200 Fly (2:09.19) and freshman Jon Peck (East Hartford, CT) won the 1650 Free (18:53.00). The Knights won the 200 Medley Relay (1:46.25), 400 Medley Relay (3:27.67), 200 Free Relay (1:33.71) and 400 Free Relay (3:27.67).
Freshman Sarah Morris (Amherst, NY) won the 100 Back (1:04.24) and 200 Back (2:18.31) and swam on three winning relays. Morris along with the Wolak sisters (Rhinebeck, NY), senior Roni and freshman Krissy helped the Clarkson women win the 200 Medley (1:59.32), 200 Free (1:47.95) and 400 Free (3.27.67) relays.

KNIGHTS FALL at OSWEGO
The Clarkson University Men's Swimming team lost at Oswego State on Saturday falling to the Lakers 140-98 Laker Hall. Sophomore Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) won the 200 and 500 Free, while senior Nate Decker (Whitney Point, NY) took first in the 100 Breast.

CLARKSON PLACES SECOND at OSWEGO INV.
The Clarkson University Men's Swim team place second out of seven teams at the Oswego Invitational on Saturday. The Golden Knights posted 201 points, trailing only the host Lakers who won their invitational with 280 points. Oneonta finished third with 97 points. Cortland State (85), St. Lawrence (80), Buffalo State (39) and Fredonia State (37) rounded out the field.

KNIGHTS SINK SAINTS
The Clarkson University Men's Swimming team started the season off the right way Saturday afternoon with a 127-87 win over St. Lawrence University at Clarkson's Fuller Pool.
Sophomore Matt Szrama (Orchard Park, NY) won both the 100 meter freestyle and the 200 meter freestyle events to lead the Golden Knights. Junior Tom Willey (Burnt Hills, NY) won the 50 freestyle and classmate Kevin Ashcroft (Wolverine Lake, MI) claimed first place in the 200 butterfly. Senior Jeff Lia (Auburn, NY) won the 200 back stroke for Clarkson.
