FIVE CLARKSON RECORDS FALL at WOMEN'S STATES
The Clarkson University Women's Swim team broke five school records as the Golden Knights placed 12th at the NYSWCAA Championship held at Nottingham H.S. in Syracuse over the weekend.
Junior Sarah Beamish (Pittsford, NY) broke the 11-year old mark in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:13.90. Beamish is the first Clarkson women swimmer to go under a 1:15.00 and 1:14.00. In the morning she swam a 1:41.23. Then in the evening she crushed her own record by going a 1:13.90. The old mark was 1:15.14 set by Chris Schuler in 1991.
Freshman Molly Nichols (Baldwinsville, NY) broke her own 200 backstroke record (2:19.31) by over two seconds with a time of 2:17.25.
Sophomore Jen Faucett (Charlton, NY), after breaking her leg playing rugby and missing all of first semester, came back strong to take third in the 100 butterfly breaking her own record by .01 of a second with a time of 1:01.22.
The Golden Knights also broke Clarkson records in two medley relays. Nichols, Beamish, Faucett and sophomore Roni Wolak (Rhinebeck, NY) set new standards in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay with times of 1:56.58 and 4:17.55 respectively.

KNIGHTS ENJOY SUN, SAND, AND SWIMMING IN KEY WEST
Taking a break from the confines of Fuller Pool, the Clarkson University Men's & Women's Swimming programs traveled to the southernmost point in the United States for nine days of winter training.
The teams started off the New Year departing from Syracuse, NY via jet to Miami, FL, where bright sun and 60 degree temperatures greeted the Golden Knights. From there, Clarkson traveled to Key West, FL, the farthest south the team has ever traveled for its annual training program.
Arriving in the early evening on January 1, Clarkson stopped at the Mario F. Mitchell Aquatic Safety Center on the campus of the Florida Keys Community College for a quick swim. The Golden Knights practice schedule consisted of two daily swims at the pool, one in the early morning and then once again in the afternoon, each lasting two hours.
"The great thing about the trip is the training, because we do it twice a day, every day, and that's all we concentrate on," said Ross Garland (Bar Harbor, ME). "It's great to be around my teammates, because we live together and we spend time together, it brings us together as a team."
Although training and fitness were the primary reasons for the trip, there were always opportunities for the Golden Knights to relax and have fun. Between and after practices, the student-athletes played volleyball, soaked up the sun, barbequed, and traveled around the small island on the bicycles they had for transportation between the pool and the condominium complex where they resided.
"We have a better focus of what we're here for," commented head coach Mick Maguire on the purpose of traveling to Key West. "We come down here, we're around other college teams, and we're isolated from distractions. The atmosphere down here is great, because if we tried to do the workouts we do here in Potsdam, it would be almost impossible. We eat, sleep, and drink swimming for nine days, and the teams have fun."
"Coming to Florida is a team builder," remarked senior Jennifer Miller (Oswego, NY). "We train, we exercise, and we have fun."
The teams raised the money for the trip by teaching swim classes to local youths, and also through the 24-Hour Swim Relay held every fall at Clarkson. Raising the funds makes the trip affordable for the students, as they only have to pay a small cost for the nine-day training trip.
The Golden Knights return late to Potsdam on January 9, and the Men's team will compete at the RPI Invitational on Saturday, January 12. Both teams are in action on Wednesday, January 16, at Plattsburgh State.
