Knights Surgical from Service Line with 23 Aces in Two Sweeps on Saturday

Potsdam, NY – A strong effort from the service line in both matches for the Clarkson University Volleyball team allowed the Golden Knights to keep their opponents off-balance, claiming a pair of sweeps against SUNY Cobleskill (25-9, 25-10, 25-9) and SUNY Brockport (25-12, 25-19, 25-23) on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 on the season and will face Middlebury College at 1:30 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Clarkson dominated from the start against the Tigers, hitting .344 in the first set, .500 in the second set, and a comparatively pedestrian .238 in the third, rarely allowing Cobleskill to get much going on offense. Making it more difficult, Clarkson's serve game was top tier, recording 15 aces overall. Emma Cortez finished with five while Cecilia Velardi and Brianna Hale each added three aces. Hale spread the wealth on offense, as Ainslie Reimer led the team with nine kills, but was followed closely by Conley Burns (eight kills) and Chase Chudoba (seven kills).

The Knights' offense came out red hot against Brockport as well, hitting .367 in the opening set in which the Green and Gold more than doubled up the Golden Eagles. After that, however, Clarkson had some unforced errors that allowed Brockport to stick around in the final two sets despite hitting even over that time (17-17-92). Clarkson got the offense it needed from its first-year class as Trinity Simon led the way with 11 kills and a .222 hitting percentage. Burns (8-2-23) and Chudoba (8-3-24) put up nearly identical attack lines to bolster the Knights' offense.

Clarkson wasn't quite as pinpoint with its service game in the match against the Golden Eagles, but the team still struck for eight aces, including some key points in the third set. Clarkson's defense also held up well as three players finished in double figures in digs, led by Olivia Baxter's 18 digs and followed closely by Hale's 14 digs and Izzie Piano's 13 digs.
