Knights Stumble at Start, Rally For Four Set Win at Oswego State

Oswego, NY – A slow start put the Clarkson University Volleyball team on its heels early, but the Golden Knights rallied to extend their winning streak to four matches, downing Oswego State in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-22).

The Golden Knights moved to 7-2 overall and the Lakers fell to 2-6 on the year. Clarkson continues its road trip with matches against Alfred University and Utica University on Saturday.

Clarkson came out stiff in the first set, giving Oswego State points with unforced errors in the early going and allowing the hosts to win eight of the first nine points. The Knights shook off some of that early rust to get back within two on a couple of occasions, but their momentum was halted each time the game got close. Down by four late (22-18), Clarkson gave up the last three points to the Lakers via unforced error and ended up just one point on the positive in hitting (9-8-37) in the first set.

The break between games seemed to somewhat reset Clarkson's offense as the team finished the game with 15 kills, though the Green and Gold still had nine errors. Clarkson built an early 5-0 advantage and looked ready to run away with the set when the lead expanded to seven (12-5) near the midway point. A few miscues and a handful of kills allowed the Lakers to draw within one (17-16), and a few points later Oswego tied the set and took the lead, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout. After a kill from Priscilla McReynolds put the Lakers up by two (23-21), the worst outcome appeared likely for the Knights. However, a kill from Ainslie Reimer halted the momentum and began a 4-0 run for Clarkson to rally for the win.

Set three saw the teams stay close for the first stretch with Clarkson holding a narrow 10-8 lead after an attack error. From that point on, though, it was all Clarkson with the Knights scoring nine of the next 10 points to build a double-digit advantage. Clarkson .286 in the set (11-3-28) and posted four aces in the game to finish with a 13-point win.

The fourth set looked a lot like the second, with Clarkson seemingly able to run away with the game. Clarkson doubled up the Lakers near the midway point (14-7) following a kill from Reimer, only to see Oswego slowly rally thanks to more unforced errors by the Knights, eventually tying the set at 18-18 and then again four points later at 20-20, pushing the Knights to take a timeout. Out of the break, Clarkson picked up kills from Reimer and Brianna Hale and later a kill by Conley Burns pushed the margin to three points. Finally, Chase Chudoba ended the drama with a kill to close the set and match. The Knights hit .417 in the final set (20-5-36) but had equal trouble stopping Oswego (12-1-33).

Burns led the team with 15 kills and Reimer added 13 kills, but it was Chase Chudoba who stood out with a .520 hitting percentage in the middle (13-0-25). Brianna Hale added 43 assists while Olivia Baxter led the defense with 25 digs.

Oswego's Priscilla McReynolds had a double-double with 11 digs and 14 kills, hitting .273 (14-2-44). Mya Bush notched 30 assists and nine digs.
