Knights Split on First Day of UR Invitational

Rochester, NY – Conley Burns recorded 35 kills over two early afternoon matches for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, as the Golden Knights split their Friday contests, falling in five sets to Smith College (22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12) and sweeping Lewis & Clark in three sets (30-28, 25-18, 25-19) in the University of Rochester Invitational.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-2 on the season and will have two more matches on Saturday, taking on Penn College first at 11:00 am and then host Rochester at 3:00 pm.

The opening set was a back-and-forth affair with Smith finally take a two-point lead after back-to-back aces from Anna Feuer to make it 15-13. Clarkson battled back shortly after thanks to four straight points, but the Bears regained the lead at 22-21 off a kill from Feuer. That was the last time Smith would have the lead, though, as Clarkson finished off the set with a kill from Ainslie Reimer, an ace from Emma Cortez, a kill from Chase Chudoba, and an error by the Bears. Clarkson hit .371 in the opening set.
Set two saw Smith lead throughout, turning a narrow three-point lead (11-8) into a seven-point margin (18-11) off a kill from Uma Schulz. The Knights picked up points sporadically, but not enough to mount a serious comeback attempt in the game.

Smith continued to cruise at the start of the third with an early 6-2 lead only to see the Knights score five straight to take the lead. From there it was a close contest, but the Knights pushed their advantage to three points on three occasions, including as late as 16-13. Smith mounted a rush to take the lead at 19-18 but again the two teams traded points. The Bears had enough in the tank to score the last two points of the set via kills with points from Alison Chapin and Anna Feuer.

Clarkson started the fourth set with five of the first six points as the seesaw match continued and the Knights held the advantage up until the midway point of the game. An ace by Maddie Hilboki eventually put the Bears ahead, but Clarkson went on a 7-1 run, capped by consecutive kills by Conley Burns. Even with a five-point lead late (22-17), the Knights had their hands full until the end, utilizing a kill from Amelia Bartfalvi to close out the set.

In the deciding set, Smith scored four of the first five points, but the Knights responded with three straight to tie the set. Smith quickly regained the lead, and would not relinquish it, though Clarkson pressed the issue. Down by three after an ace and a timeout, the Knights emerged from the break with a solo block by Jordyn Leader to put the tally at 11-9. Unfortunately for Clarkson, the teams traded points for the remainder of the set, allowing Smith to escape with the win.

For a second straight match, Clarkson filled up the stat sheet in the five-setter, with Conley Burns notching 22 kills and Ainslie Reimer posting 12 kills with nine digs. Chase Chudoba also added eight kills. Brianna Hale was a dig short of a double-double with 41 assists and nine digs, Olivia Baxter posted 16 digs, and Jordyn Leader had six blocks (three solo, three assists).

In the second match of the day, Clarkson had little time to recover from its long five-set meeting against Smith College, and it showed with a sluggish performance against Lewis & Clark, as the team was able to hit just .116 in the first game. Fortunately, the Knights capitalized on 13 unforced errors. Clarkson trailed by five near the end of the first set (23-18) after a kill and an ace, but the Knights rallied with a kill from Reimer, an ace from Emma Cortez, and another kill by Chudoba, forcing the River Otters to take a timeout. Two consecutive attack errors tied the set, but Clarkson miscue saw the Knights down to their last point. Conley Burns produced kills to keep Clarkson alive, and later on Reimer posted two kills around an attack error by Lewis & Clark to finish off the game.

Set two saw Clarkson role on a 9-1 early on to take a 12-5 advantage and the Knights maintained at least a four-point advantage for the remainder of the set. The Green and Gold led by eight points (20-12) following an ace by Brianna Hale and that proved to be enough buffer for Clarkson to close out the game.

The third set was close again at the start, with the River Otters taking a narrow 11-10 lead off a kill from HB Schuett. However, it was all Clarkson for the rest of the contest. The Knights scored four straight, capped by a Chudoba kill. Later on two kills from Burns boosted the Green and Gold to a four-point advantage, and the team rode several errors to push the gap further, ending the set on kills by Georgia Thurmond and Chase Chudoba.

Conley Burns hit .276 in the match, recording 13 kills over three sets. Ainslie Reimer added eight kills and seven digs while Thurmond and Chudoba each chipped in five kills, with Chudoba also recording four of the team's 12 aces. Olivia Baxter and Cecilia Velardi each had nine digs, and Brianna Hale had 22 assists to go along with eight digs.
