Rochester Holds On For 13-11 Win Over Golden Knights

Potsdam, NY – Despite a 32-17 edge in total shots over the course of the final three quarters, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team couldn't find the back of the net quite enough to upend University of Rochester, as the Golden Knights suffered a 13-11 setback in Liberty League play Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in conference games, while Rochester moved forward to 8-4 and 5-2. Clarkson plays a non-league game on Monday, visiting SUNY Canton.

Rochester came out strong with four goals in the first nine minutes, forcing Clarkson to take a timeout to regroup near the midway point of the first quarter. After that, the Knights' defense began to settle in while the offense was also up to task, scoring five of the next six goals over 15 minutes between the first and second periods. Although Anna Rogers scored twice in a stretch of a minute near the end of the second quarter, Isabella Koproski scored in the final two minutes to tie the game at 7-7 at the break.

Over the course of the final three quarters, Isla Ablin performed well in the Rochester crease, making numerous saves against Clarkson's busy offense. She had eight saves in the second quarter alone and then made four saves in both the third and fourth quarters, enough to keep the Knights off the board at key moments. Rogers and Alyssa Gorny traded goals in the third quarter for Rochester, including two in the final 80 seconds to provide the visitors with a three-goal cushion through 45 minutes.

In the fourth, Rochester extended its margin to four on two occasions, and led 13-9 leading into the final minute. Clarkson did its best with a late comeback attempt, scoring while a player up thanks to Sydney Nakas and then again on an even-strength rush by Lauren McCorry, but the Knights ran out of time to complete the attempt.

Lauren McCorry led the Golden Knights with three goals while both Gabby Cranfield and Sydney Nakas each added three points with two goals and an assist apiece. Mea Tranquilli scooped up five groundballs and caused two turnovers, and Maeve Bartell also had three groundballs.

For Rochester, Anna Rogers carried the offense with an impressive nine-point day thanks to eight goals and one assist and Alyssa Gorny chipped in five points on three goals and two assists to go along with six draw controls. Maddie Bunting led the way with four groundballs.

Clarkson had a 38-27 edge in shots overall. Isla Ablin posted 18 saves for the Yellowjackets and Jennaca McGill had eight stops for Clarkson.
