Knights Fall Twice at Rochester, 10-2 and 5-3

Rochester, NY – Freshman Ivy Borkoski produced pair of multi-hit games on Saturday, but the Clarkson University Softball team was unable to pick up a win against University of Rochester, falling 10-2 in six innings in the opener and then 5-3 in the nightcap.

Clarkson fell to 2-17 overall and 0-4 in Liberty League play, while the Yellowjackets improved to 15-5 and 4-0. The Golden Knights head across town to face RIT on Sunday afternoon.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, Clarkson got on top early thanks to a bases loaded single from Ivy Borkoski which plated Lexi Rydelek, but the Yellowjackets got one back on a fielder's choice in the bottom half of the inning. Rochester picked up two runs in the bottom of the third on a Julianna Lyons home run to right and then opened the game up with four more in the bottom of the fourth. Rowan Mulholland sent one home on a sac fly, a double steal later allowed Ally Kim to score the second run of the frame, a throwing error scored a third run, and then a single by Jensen Sminchak plated another to make it 7-1.

Clarkson picked one up in the top of the fifth thanks to a double to center by Rydelek which scored Kelsea Flanagan, but the Yellowjackets ended the game in the sixth with three runs. Back-to-back bases loaded walks pushed two across and then a single from Savannah Hernandez ended the contest at 10-2.

Rydelek was 3-for-3 in the first game for the Knights, while Borkoski was 2-for-4. Molly Broccolo picked up the win with five strong innings and Avery McDonald took the loss for Clarkson, allowing four earned runs in the four frames.

Game two started with Rochester scoring in three of its first four at bats before Clarkson tightened the contest up. Rowan Mulholland singled in a run in the first, Julianna Lyons homered for the second time on the day, this time going to left-center with a two-run shot in the third, and Ally Kim had a sac fly before Riley Laygo hit a solo shot to left-center to put the tally at 5-0. Clarkson rallied in the top of the fifth with three straight run-scoring hits. Isabel Haspil sent Maddie Throumoulos around for the first run, Ivy Borkoski plated Kendall Cuyler, and Haspil scored on Emily Bulone's double to left to put the score at 5-3.

Clarkson had a chance to tie or go ahead in the top of the seventh. Although the first two hitters were retired for outs. Borkoski reached on a single, Emily Martin doubled to right to put a pair in scoring position, and Bulone walked to load up the bases. However, Rydelek grounded into a fielder's choice to end the contest.

Borkoski and Bulone each had two hits in game two for the Knights. Bella Hotchkiss took the loss for the Knights, giving up five earned in 3.1 innings of work. Amanda Corrice came on in relief and allowed just a single hit in 2.2 innings. Maddie White gained the win for Rochester, tossing seven innings and giving up seven hits while striking out six.
