Box Score
Poughkeepsie, NY – Two goals in the final five minutes put Vassar College on top late and sent the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team to its first loss in Liberty League play, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference games while Vassar moved to 5-4 and 1-1. Clarkson is at RIT next weekend.

The Golden Knights opened the game by dominating possession, rarely allowing Vassar to put together much offensively, if at all, with numerous wins at the faceoff. That stretch helped Clarkson build an early lead, scoring four times in the first six minutes, with goals coming out of the sticks of Ethan Hopkins, Ian Erskine, Sam Wesson, and James O'Rourke. Shortly after a timeout, Vassar began to assert itself offensively, scoring once to get on the board at 8:36, and then putting up three more goals in a stretch of just 66 seconds near the close of the first quarter, putting the tally at 5-4.

The high-flying offense of the opening period disappeared at the start of the second, though the Golden Knights continued to have a significant advantage in shot attempts as Vassar's defense clamped down. Specifically, the goalkeeping of Jess Geoghagen stood out, as he posted eight saves in the quarter and had a total of 14 by the break.

For the remainder of the contest, in stark contrast to the opening quarter, the game continued to be a defensive battle with longer possessions. Vassar tied the game in the first five minutes of the third and then took its first lead of the game with 4:27 to go in the quarter. Clarkson tied the contest again at 2:58, only to see Vassar reclaim the advantage in the waning seconds of the period. At the start of the fourth, Clarkson knotted the game up at 8-8 on a goal from Ian Erskine at 11:27, but neither team could score for the next six minutes. That would change when Gavin Arcuri broke the tie by charging the net and just evading the crease with a low goal at 4:39. Vassar appeared to put the game away with a goal up high with 1:06 to go, but when the Brewers tried to run out the clock, the Knights forced a turnover and went into rapid transition, getting a goal with a little over four seconds left in the game from Connor Holly. The ensuing faceoff took too much time for the Knights to gain possession and get one more final shot off, allowing Vassar to escape with the win.

Ian Erskine led the Clarkson offense with four points, scoring three goals and adding an assist. Both Ethan Hopkins and Connor Holly Scored twice, while Robert Fox (two assists) and Sam Wesson (one goal, one assist) also added two points. Steve Getsie caused four turnovers and had three groundballs and William Goyette posted five groundballs. Gabe Vassallo went 14-for-19 on faceoffs.

For Vassar, Gavin Arcuri had five points with three goals and two assists and Tate Tinker notched two goals and two assists for four points.

Clarkson finished with a 41-27 edge in shots and a 29-18 advantage in shots on goal, as well as a 39-28 advantage in ground balls though that margin was created by a large gap in faceoff wins (17-6). Griffin Emerson made eight saves for the Knights and Jess Geoghagen finished with 20 stops for the Brewers.
