Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Clarkson Suffers First Loss of Season at Trinity, 14-8

Hartford, CT - After bullying teams defensively for the first few weeks of the season, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team found itself on the short end against a team that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, falling 14-8 to Trinity in non-league action Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-1 on the year while Trinity pushed its mark to 3-2. Clarkson is back at home on Saturday when it opens up Liberty League play, hosting Ithaca College.

The Bantams helped their caused with a strong presence on faceoffs, winning 18 of 28 tries, including a 14-4 record at the 'x' by William Lavallee. Those wins kept the Knights' defense busy, and Clarkson was up to the task in the early going, holding a 4-3 lead early on in the second quarter after a William Goyette goal. While up a player, the Bantams tied the game just 32 seconds later and the home team would never trail again. Trinity was helped on two occasions in the second quarter by winning faceoffs and quickly converting. One of those goals was near the midway point of the period, but the other came very late. Trinity had scored a goal with 12 seconds to go when Jay Ottomanelli found Colin Sullivan, but the ensuing faceoff was again won by the Bantams and Ottomanelli scored with two seconds to go, turning a one-goal game into a three-score advantage for Trinity at the break.

Clarkson's offense was held quieted for a stretch of 20-plus minutes overlapping the second and third quarters. The Knights last scored in the second on a goal from Derek Torres at 8:57, but did not get on the board again until there was just under three minutes to go in the third when Torres found freshman Donnie Duffus, putting the tally at 11-6. Unfortunately for Clarkson, that goal did not spark the run the team needed, as the Knights scored just twice in the fourth.

Alex Alfieri posted three assists in the game and Torres had a pair of goals and one helper. James O'Rourke also chipped in a goal and two assists. Defensively, Griffin Emerson posted 16 saves, two short of his season-high, and Dylan Coan had three groundballs and a caused turnover.

For Trinity, Ottomanelli had five points on four goals and an assist and Bo Page notched a goal with three assists for four points. Miles Harvey also scored three times and Sullivan added two goals and one assist. Rory McAloon caused five turnovers, and Davis Ike made 11 saves in the Trinity crease.

Trinity finished with a 56-32 edge in total shots, though the margin was closer in shots on goal at 30-20. The Bantams won the battle on the ground (34-28), though that advantage was bolstered by their advantage in faceoff wins.
