Davenport, FL - Opening up a stretch in Florida on Thursday, the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader with Calvin University, dropping game one 2-0 before responding with a 9-4 victory in game two
Clarkson moves to 4-3 overall and will return to action Friday with a single game against Farmingdale State at 7 p.m. Calvin sees its record go to 6-6.Â
Both teams would combine for just a single base runner over the first three innings of game one with Clarkson leaving the single runner on base following an Aidan Kuefner single in the top of the first. Jacob Shirley continued to deal well on the mound in the early going, striking out five over the first three frames alone.Â
Calvin found a breakthrough in the top of the fourth courtesy of the first string of hits of the contest. Landon Mikula reached on a single through the right side and advanced to second on a deep fly ball that was caught in foul territory. Landon Evans would then follow with a rip up the middle infield that would just creep through, bringing Mikula around to score.Â
The Knights would add a second in the top of the sixth, again thanks to the efforts of Mikula. Sitting on a 3-2 count, the righty would connect on pitch number six of the at bat, sending it over the left field wall for the 2-0 lead.Â
A James Mason double down the left line in the bottom half of the inning would account for the lone baserunner for both sides for the remainder of game one as Noah Etnyre would retire the final five Clarkson batters in the 2-0 final.Â
Shirley would receive the loss on the mound for the Golden Knights despite a seven inning, four hit outing while fanning nine batters. Entyre earned his first win on the bump for Calvin, giving up just two hits while striking out six through a complete game effort.Â
Clarkson would waste no time getting out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second in game two. Following three straight walks to load the bases, CJ Kanick would drill a line drive back at the pitcher who managed to knock it down and get the out at first while allowing David Harris to cross home for the first run. Seth Albert added another two in the next at bat, connecting on a double over the left fielder's glove which scored Beau Vardion and Nolan Merrow from third and second.Â
The floodgates would open in the top of the third for the Golden Knights who would tack on six more insurance runs. Joe Figliolino would double in the second at bat of the frame which scored Aidan Kuefner from first before the bases would be loaded again following a Harris walk and Nolan Merrow hit by pitch. CJ Cartier then connected on a sac fly to bring Figliolino across before Kanick and Albert singled back-to-back to make it 8-0. Kuefner finished the scoring for the inning with a single up the middle to score Albert and push the advantage to 9-0.Â
Calvin got one back in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs before a Mason Stryker single up the middle to score one. Jason McGee would manage to strike out the next batter with a pitch low and away to get out of the jam.Â
Into the final half inning of the contest, Calvin would add two more but McGee would again limit the damage forcing a ground out to first base for the final out of the 9-4 final.Â
Five different batters would produce a hit for the Golden Knights in game two led by Alber with two hits and four RBIs. Kanick would add two RBIs of his own. Nathan Hartley would get the win in game two, striking out four while giving up two hits through four innings in the win. Fletcher Bandstra would be handed the loss with six earned runs through two innings on the mound.Â
