Knights Score Two More Sweeps in Pennsylvania

Scranton, PA – First-year collegians Amelia Bartfalvi and Chase Chudoba had impressive numbers on the attack and on the block as the Clarkson University Volleyball team posted a pair of sweeps against SUNY New Paltz (25-9, 25-14, 25-9) and Marywood (25-22, 25-17, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 16-8 on the season, while SUNY New Paltz moved to 10-19 and the Marywood saw its record go to 26-4. Clarkson is on the road next Thursday to close out the regular season, though the travel will be short as it heads across town to face SUNY Potsdam.

Clarkson was never really threatened by New Paltz in the first set, leading 11-6 early and pushing that margin to 18-6 to cruise to an opening set victory. The second was a bit closer at the start, with the Hawks scoring six of the first 10 points. However, the Knights rattled off 12 of the next 14 and had another double-digit win. The third was close at the midway point (13-8), though Clarkson scored 12 of the final 13 points for another lopsided win.

Clarkson had a number of hitters with impressive hitting percentages, none better than Chase Chudoba and Jordyn Leader, who each topped .500 thanks to lines of 6-1-9 and 5-0-9, respectively. Ainslie Reimer and Amelia Bartfalvi had larger volumes with 10 kills apiece. Brianna Hale notched 24 assists while Olivia Baster recorded 11 digs and Cecilia Velardi added 10 digs.

In the match against Marywood, sets were considerably closer, but the Knights would not trail until the opening points of the third set. Clarkson rolled out to an early seven points lead (11-4) in the first only to see it reduced to three on two occasions before the Pacers came all the way back to tie the set at 17-17. Clarkson then rattled off four straight, including a pair of aces from Chase Chudoba. Marywood pulled to within one (22-21), but Clarkson got kills from Conley Burns, Brianna Hale, and Jordyn Leader to close out the set.

Set two again saw Clarkson gain an early advantage with six of the first seven points. On three occasions, Marywood pulled to within three, the latest at 19-16, only to see the Knights respond with five straight. Amelia Bartfalvi was particularly active with a pair of kills as well as a block assist with Jordyn Leader.

The third set saw Marywood get its first lead of the day, pushing its margin to as many as four in the early going (10-6). However, an attack error ended the Pacer's run and began a stretch for the Knights, though only two of the points came off kills as blocks and unforced errors gave Clarkson a 13-10 lead. The Pacers still trailed by only two (19-17) late, but again it was a key run by Clarkson, this time utilizing two miscues by Marywood around kills from Chudoba and Reimer. Two more errors by the Pacers ended the set and the match.

Clarkson hit .382 in the second set (15-2-34) and in the third the Knights relied on 12 attack errors by Marywood.

Reimer, Bartfalvi, and Chudoba each had eight kills in the match against Marywood, with Chudoba adding in four blocks and two aces and Bartfalvi also contributing four blocks. Hale had 29 assists and Olivia Baxter posted 17 digs.
