Knights Fall in Three Versus Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – Although the Clarkson University Volleyball team was close in the final two sets, the Golden Knights didn't have enough to overcome late runs from Ithaca College, falling in straight sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-23) in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record drift to 13-8 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League while Ithaca closed out its conference season at 8-0 and moved to 21-3 overall. Clarkson is at Bard College next Friday and then plays SUNY New Paltz and Marywood on Saturday in Pennsylvania.

The Bombers hit .375 in the opening set against Clarkson's .114, building an early cushion that went from two points (7-5) to eight (14-6) following a kill from Addison Leadbetter. The Knights hovered around a six to eight point deficit for a bit before the margin eventually swelled to double figures by the conclusion of the game.

Set two again saw Ithaca hit at a robust pace (16-4-27, .444), but the Golden Knights were closer on their side thanks to a .269 clip (11-4-26). The points seesawed back and forth for the first couple dozen before the Bombers scored three straight thanks to a kill and two blocks to make it 16-11. Clarkson got back to within two (18-16) and pulled to a one-point gap (19-18) following an ace from Olivia Baxter. The Knights could not quite get that extra point to tie the set, however, getting to within one point two more times after Baxter's ace. It was down to two (24-22) after consecutive points from the Knights, but a service error ended the second set.

The Golden Knights appeared ready to force a fourth game as the team led for the majority of the third set. Ithaca briefly tied the game on a couple of occasions near the midway point, only to see the Knights gain a three-point lead (18-15) following an ace from Emma Cortez. Clarkson still led by three after an attack error by the Bombers (22-19), but the Bombers mounted their comeback at that point, receiving kills from Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu and Naomi Clauhs to tie it and going ahead off an ace from Gonzalez-Abreu (23-22). The teams traded attack errors to put the score at 24-23, but Addison Leadbetter delivered the final point to close out the set and the match.

Conley Burns posted a match-high 13 kills, hitting .303 on the day, but she was the lone Clarkson offensive player to reach double digits. Both Jordyn Leader and Ainslie Reimer posted six kills, Brianna Hale had 26 assists, and both Olivia Baxter and Emma Cortez recorded seven digs.

For Ithaca, Gonzalez-Abreu had 11 kills and 10 digs while both Addison Leadbetter and Brianna Owen had eight kills, with Leadbetter also picked up five blocks. Wesley Slavin and Amaya Parnell split setting duties with 21 and 15 assists, respectively.
