Knights Halt Losing Skid with Sweep of RIT

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Brianna Hale had six kills on only seven tries from the setter position to help lead the Clarkson University Volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-17, 25-22) of RIT on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights put an end to a five-game losing streak to improve to 13-7 on the year and 3-3 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers dropped to 7-15 and 1-5. Clarkson will celebrate its four senior student-athletes on Saturday when the team faces Ithaca College.

The opening set saw RIT score the first three points, but Clarkson responded with seven straight points, including three aces from Cecilia Velardi. The Knights saw the margin slip to two, but that would be as close as RIT would get as the Knights went on a 7-0 run late, getting three kills from three different players at the end of that stretch, making it 19-7. Another late 4-0 run was enough to take away any hope of the Tigers coming back in set one, especially since the Tigers hit -.107 in the first game.

Though RIT tied the second set a few times early on, Clarkson never relinquished the lead in the middle game. A 4-0 run near the midway point gave the Knights some breathing room thanks to bookend kills from Jordyn Leader and Chase Chudoba and Clarkson always had enough offensive juice to maintain its advantage as the set concluded with a kill from Conley Burns, an ace by Brianna Hale, and an RIT attack error.

The third set was a different story compared to the first two as RIT built an early advantage and led 11-7 after a 5-0 run which included two aces from Zoey Brasier. A timeout by the Knights was enough to change the momentum, as Chase Chudoba notched back-to-back kills to give Clarkson the lead. The Knights continued with a 12-2 run overall, going up 19-13 after an aces from Brianna Hale. The Tigers then responded with a few points to get back into the set and trailed by only two (20-18) late. It appeared as if the Knights would run away with the set when four straight points made it 24-18, but the Tigers weren't done, putting a scare into the Green and Gold with four straight points of their own. Ainslie Reimer ended things with a change of pace swing on the outside to close out the game and the match.

Brianna Hale notched 22 assists and also had some timely offense with six kills on only seven attack attempts as she capitalized on an aggressive RIT block with some tips and dumps. Conley Burns led the Clarkson offense with 11 kills, Cecilia Velardi recorded four aces, and Olivia Baxter picked up eight digs for the Knights.

For RIT, Anna Wasula had a match-best 14 kills and Layla Parker added in eight more kills. Isabel Leon had 22 assists and Isabelle Swain recorded nine digs for the Tigers.
