Manness Sets Goal Scoring Record for Knights, Clarkson Wins Fifth Straight

Cambridge, MA – Two lengthy point scoring streaks continued for Sara Manness and Kate Manness, but the most important streak continued on Saturday when the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team claimed its fifth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over Harvard in ECAC Hockey action.

The Golden Knights improved to 18-7-3 overall and 11-3-2 in conference contests, while Harvard saw its record even out at 11-11-2 and 5-9-2 in league play. Clarkson is back at home next weekend against a pair of ranked opponents in Quinnipiac and Princeton.

The first score of the contest by Lara Beecher saw Kate Manness earn an assist on the player, the 10th straight game in which the defender has scored at least one point (2 goals, 16 assists in that stretch). What proved to be the game-winning goal and then an insurance score late from Sara Manness was a record breaker for the Knights, as she became the first Clarkson player in program history to score a goal in 10 consecutive games in the course of one season, separating herself from Loren Gabel's nine-game run during the 2017-18 season. Manness has now tallied 15 goals in her 10-game streak.

The game began with a fairly quiet first period as Clarkson held modest advantages in total shots (23-17) and shots on goal (9-8) while holding Harvard down on its lone power play chance. The Crimson didn't have many chances while up a skater, but made a push immediately after, coming up short on the scoreboard nevertheless.

The second period saw a similar situation as the Golden Knights easily killed off a penalty early on in the middle stanza, only to see Harvard produce some solid chances shortly after the power play ended, including a near-goal by Elle Sproule when she was on the doorstep at the right post only to be denied Aneta Senkova.

Just a few moments after the Harvard miss, Clarkson ended the scoreless drought with two goals separated by roughly two minutes. The first came when Lara Beecher collected the puck beneath the goal line by the right circle and then skated all the way around, from behind the back of the net, over to the left circle, and eventually into the slot. Beecher then wristed a shot high over Ainsley Tuffy to put Clarkson up 1-0. Two minutes later, Clarkson created a turnover near the top of its defensive zone and created a 2-on-1 with its forwards. Manon le Scodan came in on the left side while Sara Manness began to position herself for a one-timer. Le Scodan sent the pass over to Manness, but she took her time and made the goalie commit, waiting to wrist a shot over her shoulder top shelf to make it 2-0 at 10:15.

The Crimson made things interesting at the start of the third period, pulling back within one with a goal after 30 seconds expired off the clock. Sproule held the puck in the left corner, but she was able to just tip it out to Morgan McGathey, and she snuck through to the bottom of the left circle and beat Senkova low to her glove side to make it 2-1.

A key insurance goal was scored by Clarkson midway through the third, with the first-year group of Sara Manness, Kate Manness, and Manon le Scodan combining again. Kate Manness had the puck below the goal line and slid a pass back to le Scodan just a stride short of the dot. Her pass then found Sara Manness in the slot at 11:03, making it 3-1.

Harvard had its chance in the final two minutes of the contest, pulling its goaltender and then tacking on a penalty for a 6-on-4 chance. Senkova was challenged once during that stretch, but the Knights were able to clear the puck several times to hold on for the win.

Clarkson finished with a 32-25 edge in shots on goal, but led by a wider margin of 66-42 in total shots. Harvard was held scoreless on the power play while Clarkson never had a chance to show off its player-advantage abilities. Senkova had 24 saves for Clarkson and Tuffy had 29 stops for the Crimson.
