Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Griffin, Kea Lead Knights in Win over Herons

Potsdam, N.Y. - A 19 point, 11 rebound double-double from Fallon Griffin combined with a career-high 19 points from Addie Kea paced the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team in a 66-57 win over William Smith, Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The win marks the second Liberty League victory in a row for the Knights who improve to 6-7 overall, 2-4 in conference play. William Smith falls to 2-12 and 0-7 in the Liberty League.

Both teams would have a relatively slow scoring start to the contest as Clarkson would take a 5-4 lead into the first media timeout following a driving finish from Griffin in the paint. Out of the break Bella Doyle gave the Knights their largest advantage of the first with two free throws to make it 8-4 with 3:15 left. The Herons would respond with an 11-0 streak over the remainder of the quarter, leading 15-8 after one.

Clarkson opened the second at a much different pace racking up a 12-2 run over the first four minutes, flipping the scoreboard to 20-17 in favor of the Knights. William Smith would tie things up at 20 with just about five remaining before both teams continued to trade buckets through the waning minutes of the half. Doyle would connect on a long-range try with 1:54 remaining and Maddy Polky produced a powerful layup through traffic to give Clarkson a 30-28 lead going into halftime.

The visitors slowly chipped away through the third, tying the score up early and then taking a three point lead following a Bridget McCleary jumper in the lane. Griffin then scored five of the next six points for the Knights, flipping the lead back to Clarkson, 42-40. A three from Giana Lobozzo with 51 seconds remaining was answered by Elizabeth Aiossa knocking down the front end of two free throws as both teams would be locked at 43 with 10 minutes left to play.

Clarkson would never trail over the fourth quarter as Kea would get the Knights off to a 4-0 start with a jumper and layup in the paint. The Herons managed to get back within one courtesy of a Mckenzie Mandyck three to make it 49-48 but a 9-2 run from Clarkson over the next three minutes made it 59-50 after a Griffin layup. The lead would grow to as much as 10 with just over a minute remaining thanks to a Kea free throw but a layup from Lobozzo and three from Carly Scott cut it 62-57 with 30 seconds left. William Smith would be forced to foul over the next possessions but Kea would go 4-4 from the line down the stretch to secure the 66-57 final.

Paint scoring was a major emphasis for the Knights, receiving 32 from around the rim compared to 24 for the Herons. Clarkson would also lead in points off turnovers 19-10. William Smith would shoot an impressive 44% from behind the arc (8-18) but just 36% from the free throw line, a struggle both teams faced as Clarkson would finish at 62%.

Kea would snag four steals to go along with her scoring outburst while Polky and Doyle both added nine points apiece. Emma Chambers grabbed a career-high 11 boards in the win. McCulley tallied 18 points for the Herons.
