Knights Sweep Castleton to Halt Three-Game Losing Skid

Potsdam, NY – A strong service effort, including four aces apiece from Marin Hangliter and Olivia Baxter, helped the Clarkson University Volleyball team score a three-set sweep against Vermont State University Castleton on Friday, as the Golden Knights won 25-11, 25-12, 25-20 at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-6 on the year and will be on the road Saturday, taking on SUNY Cobleskill and Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. Castleton fell to 6-4 and will head down Route 11 to play St. Lawrence on Saturday.

In the opening set, Clarkson rolled out to a 7-0 lead thanks to three aces in the first six points from Hangliter. Castleton briefly stopped the Golden Knights' streaks, but usually only on Clarkson mistakes, as seven of the 11 points in the set came off Clarkson miscues, either from the service line or on attack errors.

The second game of the match was more of the same, though Clarkson did not have the initial advantage it enjoyed in the first set. Although the Knights led 14-9, coach Carol LaMarche took a timeout to halt a three-point streak by the Spartans, with the strategy working on a service error right out of the break. That point began a 5-1 run to nearly put the margin at double digits, which eventually occurred at 21-11, as the Knights cruised to the win.

The third set was more of a back-and-forth affair, as Castleton finally got its offense clicking after negative hitting percentage in the first two sets (-.114 and .158). That was enough to put a brief scare into the Knights. Olivia Baxter posted back-to-back aces to tie the set at 15-15, and Clarkson never trailed again. On four occasions, Castleton pulled to within three, including 23-20, but Marin Hangliter delivered a pair of kills to end the match, including the final one which hit the tape and rolled down to an empty spot at the opposite end of the net.

Back from a brief break of one match, Olivia Baxter posted 23 digs in the match for the Knights, including 12 in the middle set. Hangliter also had 15 digs and posted eight kills for Clarkson, one short of Conley Burns' team-bets nine kills. Ashley Currier recorded 21 assists, nine digs, and three kills.

For Castleton, Jocelyn Ray led the team with six kills and Alondra Rojas had 14 assists and 11 digs. Brianna Walsh notched 17 digs and Nicolette Vaughn added 13 digs.
