Knights Start 2025 Season With Solid Showing in Ohio

Alliance, OH – Three challenging opponents awaited the Clarkson University Volleyball team in its opening weekend in Ohio, and the Knights performed admirably, going 1-2 with a four-set loss to 16th-ranked Marietta College on Friday and then splitting against Mount Union and Denison on Saturday.

The Golden Knights fell to the nationally-ranked Pioneers on Friday afternoon in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18), claimed a four-set win against the host team Mount Union (25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22) and ran out of gas against Denison immediately after their match against the Purple Raiders, falling to the Big Red in five sets (25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 25-23, 16-14). Clarkson will be home next weekend with four matches at Alumni Gymnasium, hosting Plattsburgh State and St. John Fisher on Friday and then taking on Keuka and Middlebury Saturday.

Against 16th-ranked Marietta on Friday afternoon, the Golden Knights twice had six-point leads (12-6, 17-11) midway through the set, but the Pioneers rallied late, scoring the final six points of the set thanks to a pair of aces from Emory Spitler. The reverse occurred for the Knights in set two, as Clarkson was the one trailing by four late (19-15), capitalizing on the final two plays to take the game when Conley Burns delivered a kill and then followed with a solo block to tie the match at 1-1.

Marietta was in control in the third set, producing a .324 hitting percentage thanks to 12 kills against no errors on 37 swings. Although the fourth set was more balanced at the end, the Pioneers enjoyed a comfortable lead for much of the set.

Marin Hangliter finished with 13 kills and 13 digs in the match, while Ashley Currier posted 29 assists, 13 digs, and four blocks (two solo, two assists). Olivia Baxter was busy in the back row with 31 digs and also chipped in six assists and a pair of aces.

Both the Knights and Mount Union had the offenses humming Saturday morning with double-digit kill numbers in all four sets for each squad. Clarkson was particularly strong in the early going, posting a .303 hitting percentage in the first set and .245 attack run in the second set. However, it took the Knights a while to get a lead in the first set, not doing so until the 16-15 mark thanks to an attack error. However, a kill from Jordyn Leader, a block from Ainslie Reimer, and another kill from Reimer allowed Clarkson to stretch the advantage to three (19-16). Clarkson rattled off the final five points of the set to win the opener, ending things with a block from Reimer and Ashley Currier.

The Green and Gold had more control against the Purple Raiders in the second set, but Mount Union rarely found itself too far behind.  Clarkson utilized a 4-0 run late in the set to gain some breathing room, but the Raiders responded with four straight late to cut the margin to two (23-21). Back-to-back kills from Reimer and Hangliter ended the set.

The third tipped in the home team's favor as Mount Union hit over .300 in the set with 15 kills, but Clarkson was back on top in the fourth game. A 5-0 run with four straight aces from Emily Alexander gave Clarkson an early 11-6 lead, but the Raiders rallied to take the lead at 13-2. From there, it was a back and forth affair as the margins remained slim. Tied at 22 late, Clarkson regained the serve after an attack error and then closed out the match with a kill from Hangliter and an ace from Olivia Baxter.

Conley Burns posted 18 kills against the Purple Raiders and Hangliter added 11 kills and 10 digs. Ashley Currier had 38 assists and 13 digs, Emily Alexander notched six kills and six aces, and Baxter picked up 14 digs in the contest.

Saturday's second match was a lengthy one, as the Knights were forced to five sets before falling to Denison. The Big Red and Clarkson grappled in the opening set, tying 10 times before Denison finally pulled away in the final three points thanks to two kills from Emily Monachino. Set two was controlled throughout by the Knights, beginning with four straight points and the margin never shrinking below two. The third set started off similarly to the first with the opening four points going to Clarkson. However, the Big Red would keep this one close until the midway point of the game. A couple of brief spurts by the Knights allowed them to pull away with a comfortable win.

Although Clarkson had a solid early lead in the fourth game and looked on its way to a win, Denison found enough in the tank to gain a four-point lead at the halfway point (13-9). The Big Red maintained that margin until late when Clarkson clawed its way back, gaining the lead on three separate occasions with both teams in the 20s. However, the Knights lost the final three points of the fourth set (25-23) and had to head to the fifth sprint set. Much like the fourth, Denison found itself up early, but Clarkson wouldn't go away, tying the set up several times. Unfortunately, Clarkson could never keep the momentum long enough to regain the lead. With the set tied at 14-14, Denison received back-to-back kills from Claire Hamilton to end the match.

In the last match of the weekend for the Knights, Conley Burns picked up 14 more kills to lead the Clarkson offense. Marin Hangliter chipped in 11 kills, 15 digs, and three aces and Ainslie Reimer recorded 10 kills. Ashley Currier had eight kills and 35 assists on offense and 14 digs on defense. Olivia Baxter picked up her second 30-plus dig match of the weekend, posting 33 digs, and Haley Currier added 10 digs.
