Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Union Pulls Away Late to Down Knights, 14-10

Potsdam, NY – Graduate student Matt Szwagulinski was busy on defense with eight groundballs and three caused turnovers, but the effort was not enough as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team dropped a 14-10 decision to Union College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Knights saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with the loss, falling to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League. Union edged forward to 3-4 and 1-0. Clarkson plays its final non-league contest of the season on Tuesday when it heads across town to take on SUNY Potsdam.

Though Union ended up owning the first quarter, it was Clarkson that had the first two goals of the game thanks to Alex Seiler and Vincent Lavarnway. However, the Garnet Chargers responded with four goals in a stretch of just over two minutes to take the lead, and ended up capping off the quarter with two more goals late for a 6-3 lead.

Clarkson responded with a dominant second period, outshooting Union 19-3 in the run and coming back with four straight goals. Seiler scored twice in the early going, Connor Holly pulled the Knights even with a man-up goal, and Robert Fox put Clarkson back on top with a score at 3:03.

The third was a back and forth affair as it appeared that the game might come down to the last possession. The score was tied three times in the third, with Union finally get a foothold at the end of the quarter. Finbar Holland scored with less than 90 seconds left and Mekhi Taylor picked up a key goal late, giving Union an 11-9 lead heading into the fourth.

Union's Nick Lynch was especially tough in the fourth quarter, as Clarkson did have a 15-7 edge in shots, but the Garnet Chargers' goalkeeper had six clutch saves, with several one-one-one stops. That was enough to snuff out any chance of a Clarkson comeback and the visitors hung on for a four-goal win.

Szwagulinski wasn't the only standout on defense for the Knights, as Jack Garvey also forced four turnovers. Robert Fox led the offense with six points on two goals and four assists while Alex Seiler also had four groundballs and three goals. Griffin Emerson made 10 saves in the Clarkson crease.

For Union, Nick Lynch made 18 saves and Luke McHugh won 18-of-26 faceoffs with 10 groundballs. Walker Popko had four points on two goals and two assists and Mike Wall added a goal and three assists for four points. Hazen Pike scored three goals and John Sula caused three turnovers.
