Knights Advance to ECAC Title Tilt with 4-1 Win Over Dartmouth

Lake Placid, NY – A strong performance from grad student Ethan Langenegger and two second-period goals proved the difference as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team advanced to the ECAC Hockey Championship game with a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth on Friday night at Herb Brooks Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 24-11-3 on the year while the Big Green saw their season come to an end at 18-13-2. Clarkson will face Cornell for the ECAC title at 5:00 pm on Saturday, a rematch of the last time the Knights were in the championship game in 2019 when they downed the Big Red 3-2 in overtime.

Trey Taylor, Tristan Sarsland, and Ayrton Martino each contributed a goal and an assist in the win, while both Ryan Richardson and Ellis Rickwood delivered two assists apiece.

Though the pace of play was high-tempo in the first period, it didn't show up on the stat sheet, as the two teams combined for just seven shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, a similar result of low shot totals from when the teams met twice during the regular season.

The scoreless first period would not be repeated in the second with the Green and Gold scoring twice in the first six minutes of the stanza. The first goal came thanks to a strong forecheck that kept the puck in the Dartmouth defensive zone for an extended stretch. Ayrton Martino was getting plenty of attention behind the goal before eventually swinging the puck around the back boards to Tristan Sarsland. Sarsland then passed the puck point to point for Trey Taylor with Taylor taking a wrist shot from just inside the blue line above the left circle. Floating out to the left circle's dot, Ryan Bottrill was there to provide a deflection, putting the Knights up 1-0 at the 1:04 mark.

A little over four minutes later, the Knights picked up their second goal of the contest. It was another long possession for Clarkson in the Dartmouth zone when Ellis Rickwood backhanded a pass out to Tristan Sarsland just above the left circle. With Martino calling for the puck near the slot, the Big Green defense tried to sneak over to the ECAC Player of the Year in anticipation of a one-timer, and that provided more than enough of a shooting lane for Sarsland, who used a Ray Fust screen and some empty space to beat Dartmouth goalie Roan Clarke high over his right blocker at 5:23.

Dartmouth began the third period with some renewed skating vigor, but the Big Green's pressing advantage was removed when the team took an offensive zone penalty. Clarkson immediately jumped on the opportunity as Dartmouth's penalty kill clumped a bit in the left wing corner behind the net. The Knights never lost possession of the puck as Ellis Rickwood used his stick and skate to settle a pass from Ryan Richardson before behind his teammate Trey Taylor all alone in the slot and Taylor would not miss from that spot, scoring only 14 seconds into the power play chance.

The Big Green ended up on the power play for 25 seconds before pulling their goalie for an extra attacker around the 15:00 mark, but an interference call put the two teams back to 4-on-4. It mattered little for Dartmouth, though as the Big Green was finally able to get on the board. A drop pass from Hank Cleaves found John Fusco, who took a stride or two up in the slot for a wrister, beating Ethan Langenegger high over his glove side at 15:32.

The Big Green went back to the empty net strategy while trailing by two and on two occasions Clarkson nearly put the game away, including a shot from Martino that missed by less than a foot with 2:22 left on the clock. After a timeout, the Knights would get their fourth goal of the contest on the empty net. Following the faceoff in the Clarkson zone, Ryan Richardson chipped the puck out of the zone and won the race to the puck on the right wing boards, tipping a pass back to the center for Martino, who finished off the play at 18:10.

Dartmouth finished the game with a 62-36 lead in shots and a 26-15 edge in shots on goal, though much of that difference came in the third period when the Big Green were fighting to extend their season. Ethan Langenegger ended up with 25 saves in the win for the Knights, and Clarke made 11 stops for Dartmouth.
