Kearney Reaches 100, But Knights Fall at Naz 18-9

Rochester, NY – Graduate student Andrew Kearney recorded the 100th point of his career with the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team but that effort came in a losing cause as the Golden Knights suffered an 18-9 loss to Nazareth University on a cold Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 1-2 on the season while Nazareth improved to 2-2. Clarkson will host two games next week, beginning with a game on Wednesday against Oswego State.

The Golden Flyers got off to a hot start with goals from five different players in the first eight minutes, putting Clarkson in an early hole. Andrew Kearney broke the ice on a pass from Mario Streiff at 4:22, but the Flyers picked up two more goals in the final four minutes to take a 7-2 lead through the first 15 minutes. Clarkson kept Nazareth's offense quiet for the first six minutes of the second quarter, but Naz responded with six goals in a stretch of barely four minutes, taking a double-digit lead into the break.

The Golden Flyers did not necessarily have a huge lead in shots (23-16), but did keep Clarkson from dictating its own pace as Nazareth won 16 of the 19 faceoffs in the opening half.

Although Nazareth did not keep up the same scoring pace in the third quarter, the Flyers kept the Knights from making any kind of comeback, allowing just a single goal in the final minute of the period. Clarkson scored twice early in the first few minutes of the fourth to give the Knights some life, but a scoreless stretch of eight minutes ended the hope of a comeback.

Kearney led the Knights with three points on two goals and an assist while Alex Alfieri and Alex Seiler each added two points for Clarkson. Seiler also posted five groundballs. Szwagulinski scored a goal, caused four turnovers and also picked up five groundballs. Griffin Emerson finished the game with 10 saves.

For Nazareth, McLean Ralston posted 14 saves on 23 shots on goal by the Knights. Offensively, Quinn McKercher had five points on four goals and an assist and Matt Farrington notched six points with three goals and three assists. Hayden Lucas also had two goals and three helpers for the Flyers. Jakob Denkenberger won 24 of 30 faceoff attempts and recorded 14 groundballs.
