Late Power Plays Come Up Empty in Knights 2-1 Loss at Providence

Providence, RI – Despite being up a skater for seven-plus minutes on the power play and then another 90 seconds with the goaltender pulled, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team could not find the back of the net in the third period, coming up short of finding the equalizer in a 2-1 loss at Providence on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-3-0 overall while the Friars etched their first tally in the win column at 1-4. The two teams will play once again on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson had its chances in the third period, especially when a Providence skater was whistled for a check from behind, creating a five-minute power-play chance. The Knights had a number of shots in the stretch, but most missed the cage, including what was perhaps the best scoring opportunity. With a little under a minute to go in the five-minute penalty, Kiera Hurry looked like she had some space for a one-timer, but just as the slapshot was getting launched, a Providence stick was able to redirect the attempt. Another penalty late gave Clarkson more chances, as did the time with the goalie out of the cage, but the Knights' best shots went just wide of the frame.

In the opening period, it took a few minutes for the Golden Knights to shake off the rust from a two-week layoff of competition, but an early power play allowed the Green and Gold to get on the board. The initial moments of the power play had Clarkson off balance, struggling to keep the puck in the zone. However, those issues turned into a positive as it resulted in a goal. With the puck briefly cleared into the neutral zone, Clarkson regained possession and the puck was sent to the right side boards by Madison Chantler to Sara Manness. With her head up, Manness made a simple pass into space for Raedyn Spademan, and Spademan took a couple of strides before going over the shoulder glove side of Providence goaltender Hope Walinski at 7:33.

Clarkson appeared to have a second goal on the board late in the second period, but after a long review the goal was called off due to a goaltender interference call just short of the tip-in.

The game evened up in the second period as Providence enjoyed some renewed energy due to the game being put at a one-goal differential. About four minutes in Kiara Kraft almost scored on the doorstep, but Holly Gruber was able to knock the puck away with her left skate. Providence would get on the board around the midway point of the second period on the power play. What looked like a harmless shot from the point by Cristina Cavaliere was able to sneak past Clarkson netminder Holly Gruber, as the goaltender was trying to find the puck around a number of screens in the slot. Reichen Kirchmair and Jessie Pellerin were each awarded assists on the goal at 9:59.

Clarkson ended the second period on the power play and began the third with 21 seconds of an extra skater. Providence continued to put pressure on the Knights once the game was back to even and eventually scored the game-winner midway through the period. Roughly a minute after a power play for the Friars had concluded, Providence was still skating with the puck in its offensive zone and not relinquishing possession. That strategy worked for the Friars against some tired legs of the Clarkson defense when Audrey Knapp, from the right side boards, found Reichen Kirchmair in the slot. Kirchmair took one step to her left and went top shelf on the stick side of Gruber, locating the top of the net at 8:48.

With 10:43 left on the clock, Clarkson started on its five-minute power play and came up empty. Just two minutes later, a tripping penalty put the Knights on the power play again, with a couple of shots in close denied by Hope Walinski. In the final stretch, none of Clarkson's attempts made it onto the Providence goal.

Clarkson ended the game with a 34-28 edge in shots and each team scored once on the power play. The Knights also had a narrow 31-28 lead in faceoffs won. Gruber made 26 saves for Clarkson and Walinski had 33 stops for Providence.
