Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Yale Escapes with 2-1 Win Over Knights

Potsdam, NY – Although two of the top 11 offenses met Friday evening at Cheel, it took nearly two full periods before a goal was scored as Yale University nipped the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team 2-1 in ECAC Hockey action.

The Golden Knights fell to 18-6-1 overall and 9-4-0 in ECAC Hockey while Yale edged forward to 11-7-2 overall and 6-6-1 in league games. Clarkson hosts Brown University on Saturday afternoon.

The first period was quiet with only a handful of attempts making it through either team's defense and onto the cage. The biggest opportunity for either team came late in the way of a penalty as Nicole Gosling was whistled for a five-minute penalty when she lost her skates and ended up hitting a Yale player from behind in the last minute. Despite the lengthy stretch on the power play, the Bulldogs didn't get much in the way of offense, recording only two shots on goal in the final 33 seconds of the first and the opening four-plus minutes of the second period.

Clarkson was held without a shot or shot on goal for much of the first portion of the second period due to being on the penalty kill, but the Knights did finally get some solid opportunities near the middle of the frame. However, it was Yale that would get on the scoreboard first. Off a faceoff in the Yale defensive end, a Clarkson player slipped on the ice and an attempted poke of the puck was missed, allowing the Bulldogs for a 3-on-1. Another Clarkson defender would get back into the fray, but it was too late as Gracie Gilkyson tipped in a pass from Mariya Rauf from the right wing side at 17:26 in the second.

The Bulldogs turned the momentum further in their favor a minute later. Stephanie Stainton had a good shot near left circle and slot, but was denied by Adreanna Doucette. However, the puck bounced off Doucette's pad and found Anna Bargman, who took little time in slapping the errant puck into the goal at 18:35.

Clarkson was dominant in the third period, hitting the post multiple times and getting some close calls against Pia Dukaric. However, a penalty put the Knights down a skater for the second time in the game, allowing Yale to slow the pace. Once the power play ended, Clarkson pulled Doucette for the extra attacker with a little over three minutes to go and a penalty whistled on Yale gave Clarkson a 6-on-4 chance. The Knights took plenty of time working the puck around the perimeter, but the patience paid off as Haley Winn slapped a shot in from the top of the left circle.

The Knights had one more chance on the final rush with 10 seconds to go, but Dukaric covered the puck up with less than a second to go to close out the contest.

Yale ended with a modest 22-21 lead in shots on goal, though the Knights had 59 total attempts to Yale's 47. Clarkson was 1-for-1 on the power play and the Bulldogs were empty on their two tries. Doucette finished with 20 saves, as did Dukaric for Yale.
